DON’T AGONIZE, ORGANIZE! The award winning, record breaking Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is happening this March. Join us again or organize for the first time to improve Wikipedia and affirm the importance of the arts and intersectional feminisms. It matters more than ever as we face a post-fact world, and what may follow. Email us at info(a)artandfeminism.org to learn more about organizing an event.
WHY?
Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Established in 2014, Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is a response to the gender gap in content and participation on Wikipedia.
As co-organizers of Art+Feminism, we’ve been deeply disturbed by the sheer amount of fake news on social media, and its influence on the recent US election. We believe this makes our work even more pressing. Now more than ever we must gather together to improve Wikipedia and affirm work of women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and other marginalized peoples.
HOW?
Hold an Edit-a-thon at your local university, artist run center, museum, community center, etc! Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons address content and participation gaps by inviting people of all gender identities and expressions to gather for communal updating of Wikipedia entries related to art and feminism. The leadership collective supports Edit-a-thon organizers by: providing an organizer’s kit with suggested workflow, promotional and training materials, and more; funding to defray the costs of refreshments and childcare; and training and support.
WHEN?
The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at The Museum of Modern Art, New York will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Node events are welcome to hold their event on this day or any other date in March, 2017 that makes sense for your community. To learn more and get involved, contact the lead co-organizers via email: info(a)artandfeminism.org.
The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is lead by Siân Evans, Instruction Librarian, MICA; Jacqueline Mabey/failed projects, independent curator; and Michael Mandiberg, Professor of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island/CUNY and Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Sincerely,
---

Hello Everyone,
As we all know, there is an upcoming Wikimedia workshop in early 2017 to be
held in Buea, Cameroon. This workshop will train interested attendees on
installation and local setup/config of MediaWiki and also usability of
VisualEditor. This workshop will take place on the same day and to register
for this workshop, do so by visiting this link:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmLa7sBoRbSu5c8Dn5TfpEDx-CA4DS2PT…
.
Please as the registration is on-going, do well to inform as many people
possible to register for the workshop. This training will go a long way to
help members of the community in various domains like software engineering
and development on real life projects and also how to write beautiful
articles and publish on Wikipedia and other information sharing mediums. Do
well to share the registration link in WhatsApp groups, Facebook groups and
where many users can be reached.
We have less than a month to close the registration and do make the
information to reach as much users as possible so they can register. For
more information about the host of this event (Wikimedia Community User
Group Cameroon), visit this link:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Cameroon.
Also, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter by visiting this links:
https://www.facebook.com/WikimediaCommunityUserGroupCameroon/ and
https://twitter.com/WMCUGCameroon respectively.
*NOTE: The event will be very enriching and will benefit you (attendees) in
every aspect. Its completely free so use the opportunity wisely.*

Since Friday, we've had a slow but steady stream of admin account
compromises on WMF projects. The hacker group OurMine has taken credit
for these compromises.
We're fairly sure now that their mode of operation involves searching
for target admins in previous user/password dumps published by other
hackers, such as the 2013 Adobe hack. They're not doing an online
brute force attack against WMF. For each target, they try one or two
passwords, and if those don't work, they go on to the next target.
Their success rate is maybe 10%.
When they compromise an account, they usually do a main page
defacement or similar, get blocked, and then move on to the next target.
Today, they compromised the account of a www.mediawiki.org admin, did
a main page defacement there, and then (presumably) used the same
password to log in to Gerrit. They took a screenshot, sent it to us,
but took no other action.
So, I don't think they are truly malicious -- I think they are doing
it for fun, fame, perhaps also for their stated goal of bringing
attention to poor password security.
Indications are that they are familiarising themselves with MediaWiki
and with our community. They probably plan on continuing to do this
for some time.
We're doing what we can to slow them down, but admins and other users
with privileged access also need to take some responsibility for the
security of their accounts. Specifically:
* If you're an admin, please enable two-factor authentication.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/H:2FA>
* Please change your password, if you haven't already changed it in
the last week. Use a new password that is not used on any other site.
* Please do not share passwords across different WMF services, for
example, between the wikis and Gerrit.

elsewhere as appropriate.)
