I concur with everything that was said above :)
Just to be clear, I'm not fundamentally against a California chapter;
I'm just seeing a lot of energy and a lot of potential, and I'd like
to advise people to direct this energy in the most useful direction,
which may or may not be the creation of a chapter -- I'm just saying
the decision should be well-thought and based on actual, clearly
identified needs.
Can I just concur with what was previously concurred?
There's obviously precedent for a sub-national U.S. chapter—this isn't
at issue at all. I can speak for ChapCom, however, when I say that
we'd rather see a chapter grow organically, gaining official status
only when it reaches a certain critical mass.
There have been meetups, of course, and Maker Faire is always a blast,
but everything Phoebe has said is spot-on. A chapter isn't just a fan
club; there are far-reaching implications that I frankly don't see the
current Bay Area community—much less all California Wikimedians—ready
to take on.
I'm not saying "no"; I'm just saying that there's still quite a way
to
go before you can expect to be able to slap bylaws down and expect
approval.
