The Wiki Loves Africa photographic contest is currently running, for the
6th year, under the theme "Africa on the Move"
It should be made clear that the goal of the contest is not limited to
collecting freely licenced images to illustrate wikipedia articles
(though of course, there is also that...). It is also the opportunity to
recruit and train new contributors. It is also the opportunity to
promote the wikimedia projects in countries where the awareness can
still benefit from improvements. It is also the opportunity for tiny new
groups to join the larger community and increase their knowledge of our
mouvement.
Naturally... this implies that a large part of the photo contest
operations usually take place in offline (face-to-face) events
(edit-a-thons, photo walks, upload sessions etc.). Which obviously is
currently a problem...
So... we have just announced some modifications to the contest rules and
operations.
This is due to the global health crisis with all Wikimedia related
events being cancelled.
And this is due to a context... with rather few cases in most African
countries, the population in Africa is currently not following the
recent recommandations to practice social distanciation or even to stay
at home.
First note that all offline activities are being cancelled as expected.
Second, winners ceremonies will be either cancelled (and gifts sent by
postal mail to winners) or will be delayed till... later (we recommand
to maintain the ceremonies and host them after the crisis is over)
The entry deadline for Wiki Loves Africa has been extended to *15th
APRIL 2020* to accomodate the following changes :
We suggest people to upload already existing, archived, images that are
sitting on their hard drives at home.
We will also be hosting some ONLINE events and activities to ensure that
participants and teams are all supported and can still enter. Bear with
us... this will be an experiment ;)
We also decided to urge people to stay at home using the hashtags
#StayAtHome <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/stayathome?epa=HASHTAG>
and #RestezChezVous and hope that this will help local teams further
spread this message locally for the sake of all.
We have created a bunch of visuals to improve communication in those
directions, which will be used in the next few days.

*Dear friends*
*
Due to the coronavirus crisis, it has been advised that all offline
(in-person) public events funded by Rapid Grants, Project Grants or
Annual Plan Grants had to be cancelled or postponed until further notice.
Naturally, it impacts the operations of the Wiki Loves Africa
photographic contest.
An online meeting was organized on Saturday 14th of March to brainstorm
and decide how to best mitigate the situation. The notes of that meeting
may be found here : https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WikiLovesAfrica_2020
Those are the main elements
1.
Contest will close April 15thIt has been decided that the deadline
to submit images would be extended by 2 weeks to accomodate the
groups who had planned upload sessions and have to cancel them.
Please note that the display of site notice calling for
participation to the contest will not be extended. The site notice
will still be displayed till March 31th. But it will be possible to
upload images till April 15h.
2.
Ceremonies will be delayed until further noticeOne of the important
elements of the contest is to promote wikimedia projects in Africa,
but also to rejoin and share a happy moment with wikimedians and
winners. It would be quite unfortunate to replace ceremonies with
simple sending of certificates and gifts by postal mail to thank
winners. There is no urgency to decide on winners and to announce
them, nor to have ceremonies. We propose that jury meetings and
winners ceremonies can be delayed by a couple of months, or even to
fall 2020.
3.
Delays for reporting rapid grants will be asked to WMF grant
teamsNaturally, if ceremonies are delayed by several months, it may
be that the deadline of the rapid grant requests need to be extended
as well. We will discuss that with WMF. We can not be sure what they
say, but please do not let the fear of a report deadline prevent you
from doing what seems sensible doing. We are heading toward
difficult times and we need to be smart. Safety should be a concern.
A grant report deadline should not be.
4.
Increase of social media presence in the next 2 weeksWe advise that
the social media presence (facebook, twitter, instagram) be
reinforced until the end of the contest. Most countries are
currently being quite active on social media, but their
announcements are often focusing on offline events and announcements
of outcome of such meetings. We advise that communication now focus
on- display of excellent images, disrupting images, funny images etc
or - communication of figures of participation in the country or
globally so far- or promotion of wikipedia articles reusing contest
images(those are examples, be creative !)
5.
Organization of online edit-a-thons by countriesOther wikimedia
groups have done so last week-end, and it worked. This could also be
done in local languages. You may use skype, or hangout, or zoom (or
any other mean you will find suitable for you). This is quite new
for all of us... but our community is usually willing to make new
experiments. So why not online edit-a-thons ? :)
6.
Organization of two online webinars (one French, one English) -
recordedWe will try to organize in the next 10 days two online
sessions, with - general presentation of Wiki Loves Africa contest.
Its context. 5 years outcome. - this year contest. 2020 theme and
examples. General outcome so far. - demo of the upload sessions
- stories from local countries (1-3 stories from 1-3 people)
- discussionThose sessions will be recorded then posted online and
promoted. We will use EventBrite to pre-record participation and send
reminders. Of course, if someone wants to do the same in Arabic, please
jump in WE NEED VOLUNTEERS ;-)
Discussion ---> on our Telegram Group Page to coordinate :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Africa_2020/Online
Let’s do the best based on the situation. Please everyone stay safe. I
am aware this may seem very far away and odd for some of you because
your countries are mostly disease-free. Mine is confined and this is no
joke.

Dear All
As some of you might have heard, all grantees have received an email from Katherine Maher (in full below) requesting that in-person events representing Wikimedia communities be postponed or cancelled until the risk of contracting COVID is no more. This obviously affects all the Wiki Loves Africa events that are yet to occur. I know that the levels of anxiety and fear across Africa are not nearly as high as the ones in Europe or the US, but the threat remains, and it only takes one infected person who doesn’t know they are sick to infect many people.
Those of you with rapid grants or other funding should please take this request very seriously. Those without direct funding please consider the request to cancel all in-person events. Please let your community, partners and possible attendees know immediately.
As Katherine says, the obvious answer is to push for more online effort - in the case of WIki Loves Africa this could be encouragement and mentoring? What other things can be done that do not require person to person contact? All ideas are welcome - and we look forward to discussing them at the meeting that Florence has organised: mention your availability here: https://doodle.com/poll/7qcpvsv3vum34kwq
If you want to chat about this request with the WLA community, please join the Telegram group via this link: https://t.me/joinchat/FI9fz0pnPNiWbyyLr-YsFQ
Thank you!!
Isla and Florence
+++ Katherine’s Message to Grantees +++
Summary:
All offline (in-person) public events funded by Wikimedia Foundation grants must be cancelled or postponed until further notice
Cancellation fees, other penalties, and expenses already incurred can be covered through grant funds
Not complying with these instructions might affect future grant requests
We will not be approving new grants for offline events happening before September 15, 2020 until further notice
Please contact your program officers for further guidance
Dear Wikimedia Foundation Grantees,
We are writing to provide guidance for grant-funded programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] This situation is rapidly evolving, and we have made some decisions that we would like to communicate to you.
Cancelling events
We have reviewed the current global public health landscape and we ask all grantees to postpone or cancel all public events and activities until the World Health Organization declares the COVID-19 pandemic over.
We know this might be a difficult decision to make, and that this will mean cancelling events of great importance to our community. We understand and appreciate all the efforts you have put into preparing these events, from requesting a grant to public outreach.
However, our first priority is the health and safety of you, your Wikimedia community, and the general public health. Global public health guidance indicates that the more quickly the world responds to a pandemic, the better off the outcomes. In order to safeguard free knowledge, we must also prioritize the well-being of the people who make it possible.
Next steps
It’s important to keep our communities together and connected during this time. We encourage you to consider if there are other ways you can repurpose the grant funds toward other mission-aligned activities, such as holding events or meetings online.
Your program officer is available if you want to discuss ideas for other ways to use your grant funds, so please reach out to us if you would like to talk. If you are unable or decide not to repurpose your event, you and your program officer will work together to repurpose the funds to a later grant or return the funds to the Wikimedia Foundation.
We are asking people to take this seriously. If we learn that you held an event using Wikimedia Foundation funds after receiving this request to cancel, we reserve the right to withhold funding for future grants.
We are here to support you and your communities through these challenging circumstances. Stay safe!
With thanks,
Katherine Maher
P.S. If you have any questions about this notice or your grant, please contact your program officer.

Hey,
I'm from Jungle Bus, a French company that maps public transport in
OpenStreetMap, and in particular in Africa. We are really excited by the
theme of the Wiki Loves Africa 2020 contest!
We would like to organize a kind of sub-contest about paratransit in Africa.
Despite its popularity, paratransit is under-documented, in general, and
on Wikipedia & Wikidata in particular.
The subcontest will be about submitting of visual representations of
locally specific paratransit vehicles (matatus, kombis, trotro, gbakas,
etc) and equipment (stops and stations).
While we will mostly target the OpenStreetMap communities (that already
take geolocated pictures to support their mapping activities), we would
like to keep it open to everyone and under the same conditions as the
Wiki Loves Africa contest. I think it's a cool opportunity to bridge the
gap between open communities !
Does it sounds good for you ?
Can we create a Commons category to gather the submissions ? Something
like "Jungle Bus Paratransit contest 2020"
Generally speaking, we are wikimedian beginners so we are open to any
comments and help to do this in the best possible way ;)
