I am excited to share the results of the 2024 Wiki Loves Africa contest. Wiki
Loves Africa
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2023> aims to
celebrate the richness, diversity and beauty of Africa by encouraging
participants and contributors to upload their media to Wikimedia Commons
for use on Wikipedia.
This year, Wiki Loves Africa called for images, video and audio that
reflected its 2024 theme of Africa Creates, which was especially chosen by
the community to celebrate 10 years since the contest first launched in
2014. The continent-wide call, and the many events organised by local
chapters and usergroups (whose continued support have been integral to
making this project a highlight in many African Wikimedian’s and
photographer’s calendars alike) resulted in a total

of 14,163 entries that were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by 796 media
specialists and photographers representing 45 countries

50% of whom were entirely new to the Wikimedia projects!
The competition ran from 1st March to 30th April. Then began the incredible
task of the volunteer reviewers and international jurors to sort through
thousands of entries and pick out the winners. The Wiki Loves Africa 2024
International Jury was made up of 15 professional photographers, filmmakers
and media specialists from Africa and international Wikimedians who are
Commons experts, to select the international winners.
It has been inspiring for the team of Wiki in Africa
<https://www.wikiinafrica.org/> to witness the creativity and work ethic of
media makers from across the continent in response to the theme, as well as
the enthusiasm of local organisers from Cape Town to Cairo. Wilson would
have been proud.

qui ont dû trier des milliers de candidatures et choisir les gagnants. Le
jury international de Wiki Loves Africa 2024 était composé de 15
photographes professionnels, cinéastes et spécialistes des médias
d’Afrique, ainsi que de Wikimédiens internationaux experts de Wikimédia
Commons, afin de sélectionner les lauréats internationaux.
L'équipe de Wiki in Africa <https://www.wikiinafrica.org/> a été inspirée
de constater la créativité et l'éthique de travail des créateurs de médias
de tout le continent en réponse au thème, ainsi que l'enthousiasme des

What can you expect from the episode?
This special episode of WikiAfrica Hour is dedicated to celebrating the
2024 winners of the Wiki Loves Africa International media contest. Under
the theme Africa Creates, 14,000+ images, videos and audio were submitted.
We will meet the organisers at the local level, the jury that selected the
final winners, and the winners themselves! The winners will share their
creative journey as Africans leading up to the point of winning Wiki Loves
Africa 2024 international prizes.

After months of working on Wiki Loves Africa: Africa Creates

resulted in uploading more than 14000 images on Commons by photographers
from all over Africa, it is time to improve the description of these images
to increase their searchability and accessibility.
We happily now announce the start of WLA 2024 ISA tool campaign to continue
celebrating the creation, manufacture, and/or production of items, objects,
commodities, and products by Africans across the continent but this time by
using ISA.
ISA Tool
ISA <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:ISA_Tool>is a fun,
multilingual tool that enables you to add structured data to images on
Wikimedia Commons. This improves the accessibility and searchability of
content.
Duration of the campaign:
From 1st October to 30th November

Dear Wiki Loves Africa community
With deep sadness, Wiki In Africa <https://www.wikiinafrica.org/> announces
the passing of our esteemed colleague, Wilson Kelechi Oluoha. As the
project and community facilitator of Wiki Loves Africa
<https://www.wikilovesafrica.net/>, Wilson was a dedicated team member
and, as a Wikimedian, a passionate advocate for open knowledge and African
representation in the digital space.
Wilson joined Wiki In Africa as the Wiki Loves Africa facilitator in 2023,
bringing his expertise as a multilingual information and media scientist to
our organization. His contributions to the Wikimedia movement began in 2018
through the Wikimedia Igbo Usergroup, a language affiliate in Nigeria. He
went on to found the IG Wiki Commons Hub in 2022, demonstrating his
commitment to building sustainable knowledge communities.
As the Wiki Loves Africa Community facilitator, Wilson was crucial in
organising and promoting Wiki In Africa’s flagship project, the annual
continental photo contest. His efforts in community engagement,
particularly in facilitating training and support sessions and workshops
and coordinating with local organisers across Africa, were instrumental in
the success of the Wiki Loves Africa project in the last two years. He was
a valued and beloved member of the Wiki In Africa team, and it is in his
honour that a Wiki Loves Africa prize in 2025 will be given in his name as
a tribute to him, ensuring that his memory lives on in the work that he so
passionately advocated for.
Wilson’s passion for open access to knowledge, his skills as an amateur
photographer, and his dedication to the Wikimedia movement have left an
indelible mark on our organisation and the broader Wikimedia community.
Beyond Wikimedia, he was a passionate cyclist, public speaker, and lover of
jazz and the music of yesteryear.
His loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside
him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Wilson’s wife, family, friends, and
colleagues. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we continue the
missions of Wiki Loves Africa and Wiki In Africa.
