Every Monday i public a new weekly botting from from my Interwiki link checker tool. After publishing i bot the list with my FlaBot-Bot. At the end of the week i have an tool to find out if an articel is now present with both links in both languages in the wiki. If this is not, perhaps because my Bot cant do it in autonoumous-mode i will post a list with all the still missing entries of my Database.
Here the batch-list for botting :
python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:af python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:es python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:fi python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:tr python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:ca python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:da python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:de python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:nds python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:en python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:nl python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:no python interwiki.py -warnfile:warning_bot_rebot_need.log -lang:sv

Some pages on en.wikipedia.org can not be altered by replace.py.
Inserting a space for this test: $ python replace.py -page:France "the most visited tourist site" " the most visited tourist site" ... Getting a page to check if we're logged in on wikipedia:en NOTE: You have unread messages on wikipedia:en Getting page to get a token. Getting page [[Non-existing page]] WARNING: No text area found on en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Non-existing%20page&action=edit. Maybe the server is down. Retrying in 1 minutes...
It then keeps retrying. I encountered it on another page also.

The only way really find out what's wrong is that after the warning of this line: print "WARNING: Could not load %s%s. Maybe the server is down. Retrying in %i minutes..." % (self.site().hostname(), path, retry_idle_time)
Either a wikipedia.output(text) or a print text is needed. The HTML needs to be viewed to find out why the reason for the error.

I have figured out in part what is happening here.
As you may know, a change was made recently (at least on en.wikipedia.org) to prevent unregistered users from creating new pages.
The "WARNING: No text area found on en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Non-existing%20page&action=edit" message occurs when the bot (for reasons I don't yet understand) is not recognized by the wiki as a logged-in user, so it is served a page (attached to this message) that is shown to non-registered users telling them to register if they want to create a new article. That's why you don't get this same error if you retrieve an existing page, because the restriction on unregistered users only applies to creating new pages.
What I don't understand is why the wiki doesn't recognize the bot user when trying to get a token, even though the bot has already logged in (as the transcript from SEWilco copied above shows clearly) and is able to retrieve and edit other pages.
Perhaps someone who is more familiar with the cookie mechanism can take it from here and diagnose the problem further.

I reported several months ago that sometimes an anon edit takes place. My SEWilcoBot account is used for several things, but if you look at my IP's log you see my replace-based citations bot ("converting/fixing footnotes") and replace.py tasks sometimes being anon.

I also have noticed that the problem is encountered repeatedly on specific articles, including (all on en:) [[Armenian Genocide]] and [[History of Central Asia]]. These articles are not locked (I've checked), but perhaps there is something else odd about them that prevents the bot from retrieving a token when loading these pages.
