Hello,
This is to announce that we are in the final days of preparing the Wikibase
Spring Release. We anticipate publishing the new release on or before May
15, 2021. An official release announcement will be made on the day we
publish.
The upcoming tarball and Docker releases will be compatible with MediaWiki
1.35 and will contain a two new Wikibase features:
-
Federated Properties
<https://doc.wikimedia.org/Wikibase/master/php/md_docs_components_repo-feder…>
: a feature that allows a newly created Wikibase instance to use the
existing Properties of Wikidata or another Wikibase. Please note that this
feature has some limitations, namely that you cannot use local properties
once you’ve enabled federation mode.
-
WikibaseManifest
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikibaseManifest>: the new
release is compatible with Wikimedia Deutschland’s extension that exposes
automatically discovered configuration information about your local
Wikibase for use by external tools.
We would also like to highlight that the new-and-improved Docker images
will now contain even more useful components
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T266779>, such as extensions that were
requested for inclusion by the community.
Finally, the release announcement will provide the location of detailed
release notes, improved Wikibase installation documentation, instructions
for upgrading your Wikibase to the new version, and instructions for
enabling/configuring new features.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Cheers,

Hello Wikibase users,
We are preparing for the next release of OpenRefine (3.5), which will
include support for editing other Wikibase instances than Wikidata
(finally!). I know some of you have already been using this feature via
OpenRefine's development version. If you have feedback any about this
let us know - perhaps there are some small things we can fix before the
release.
Also, we welcome feedback about the documentation of this feature:
https://deploy-preview-3847--openrefine-docs.netlify.app/next/manual/wikiba…
If the link above does not work anymore, try this one:
https://docs.openrefine.org/next/manual/wikibase/overview
Looking forward to hearing what you think!
Best,
Antonin
Dear Wikibase community,
You can now use the Extended Date/Time Format inside of your own Wikibase!

Hello Thad,
Thanks for your question; we haven’t precisely defined the exact rules
we’ll be using to tag docker images published in the future. For now, we
just wanted to make it clear that there are no guarantees that they will
stay the same forever.
For example, we may want to reuse the ‘1.35’ tag to refer to a different
image in the future; and that image might, for example, require different
ENV variables to be set or not than the current image.
Also, thanks for the link. It’s been read by members of the development
team. The feedback from them was that the anticipated “tagging” strategy is
more likely to follow a “Unique Tagging” approach as described in that blog
post. This is because the main goal of these images is to provide 3rd
parties with images they could go ahead and use right away rather than use
as a base for building future images from.
However, we haven’t quite finalized the details of the release strategy.
The main goal is to provide tested services in both docker, and non-docker
form that are compatible with one another.
Are you using the existing images in FROM statements to build your own
custom images? If so we’d be interested in hearing about the alterations
you’re making and your use case.
Cheers,
