Tara and Lizz in Barn dressing room, 2010 Reunion Day
Hey everyone --
I tried sending this earlier, but got a msg that it'd bounced back -- trying again.
James called this morning to let me know that Lizz had passed away yesterday at a hospital in Albuquerque.
She'd had another seizure of some kind. I'm not sure if she ever awoke from the coma.
Some friends and Winedalers are gathering tonight (Sunday) at the Dog & Duck at 8 p.m. to be together and share remembrances. I think there are plans for memorial gatherings upcoming.
I believe her ashes will be scattered at Winedale by her mother and sister sometime next week. I don't know the details on that yet.
Susan sent me this photo -- if others have good photos from this summer, or other times spent with Lizz, could you begin gathering them? I'm sure someone will be working on a memorial board of some kind for the Barn for this spring and summer.
my best to everyone,
clayton
Thanks, Clayton. Yes, it would be good to gather some photos for a memorial board and perhaps some lines and a poem or two. The memorial should be placed in the Parlin first floor hallway for a month, seems to me.

Great idea -- I'll pass along to Liz and James. I think Liz has the key to that display window by the English office.

Oh, Doc, Clayton, everyone. This is shocking and so very sad. Liz was such a bright spirit. I am so sorry for the Winedale world's and the world's loss of her.

Dear Doc, Clayton and Winedale Family,
I am thinking about Lizz and can feel her quiet strength and that glow, and see her sweet smile. I am so, so sorry that she is, unbelievably, gone from us.
Perhaps you will plant something especially for her?
And, if anyone has her parents' address, will you please let us know?
Love,
Mary

Dear Friends,
I wanted to share with you that there are some plans in the works for something this weekend in the Austin area to honor and celebrate Lizz. My partner Kathryn, who was quite close to Lizz (we have Lizz to thank for introducing us to each other), should know more soon. Winedale was mentioned to us as a possible spot, but it's not clear whether such a visit could be arranged for on short notice. As we get details, we will pass them along, in hopes that we can reach as many friends as possible.
Whatever happens, it is unlikely that Lizz's family--her mother and sister; I believe her father passed away a couple of years ago--will be involved; they are, as far as we know, only returning to Texas late this week and have no set plans for anything as of now. I'm sure they'd appreciate condolences once they're settled in (early next week?). Again, if we hear anything, we'll share it here.
Love to you all,
Matt

Dear All,
Sorry--I forgot to clarify, but please note that the plans to scatter ashes may change altogether. I say this because it's probably best not to share that information. There are certainly quite official regulations involved, but also I'm told the family hasn't made any decisions! What Clayton reported I think did originate with Allison, Lizz's sister, but it's not a set plan.

However one defines spirit, Lizz's will always be there. I'm imagining a bright star over the barn on a dark summer night.

Great imagery, Dear Alice! Tis a great sadness to lose such a bright spirit though I believe there are atoms of each of us there in the barn. I'll imagine her strutting across the grounds in her boots, shorts, pigtails and cowboy hat.. that mischievous smile, her gleeful laughter, joy of life...and those great hugs. Yes, Joy! Like the rest of us, Lizz found her bliss at Winedale. She brought her own flavor to that setting, and she took Winedale with her--far and wide--to everyone she met and everywhere she went. We're so lucky to have had her among us.
Alice's image reminds me of this from The Little Prince, which also puts me in mind of Lizz today:
"In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night . . . And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me."

Another bit of imagery that seems fitting is an excerpt from the fourth folio version of Romeo & Juliet, quoted by Bobby Kennedy to describe his older brother JFK:
Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.
I think it's fair to say that Lizz will always be a part of the firmament over Winedale.

Thanks for this Bob -- I was just realizing as I re-read your note that these very lines were performed by a 6th grade boy named Cristian, from Gonzales, at our Outreach luncheon on campus Saturday mid-day, within a few hours of Lizz's passing. There was also a beautiful and heartfelt performance of the "To be or not to be" soliloquy by a fifth grader named Jeremiah Frias, from Converse... a group of cute 4th grade bilingual kids from Austin singing "Lover and His Lass" while wearing little cowboy hats and bandanas... all of these make me think of Lizz now.
To see some lovely photos of Lizz performing in the Barn, go to James Loehlin's facebook page (and Laurel Loehlin's as well).
best,

Dear All,
Sorry--I forgot to clarify, but please note that the plans to scatter ashes may change altogether. I say this because it's probably best not to share that information. There are certainly quite official regulations involved, but also I'm told the family hasn't made any decisions! What Clayton reported I think did originate with Allison, Lizz's sister, but it's not a set plan.

Thanks, Robert. Liz' death had me thinking about the other spirits we have lost.: Donald Britton, Greg Higdon, Stephen Stepan, Alan Fear, Valerie Vescovo, Sherry Paris. Brought to mind Thomas Hardy's poem:
THE GARDEN SEAT
Its former green is blue and thin, And its once firm legs sink in and in; Soon it will break down unaware, Soon it will break down unaware.
At night when reddest flowers are black Those who once sat thereon come back; Quite a row of them sitting there, Quite a row of them sitting there.
With them the seat does not break down, Nor winter freeze them, nor floods drown, For they are as light as upper air, They are as light as upper air!

What an excellent poem, Doc. We so often know Hardy only through novels that his poetry is overlooked. But his poetry is so often birilliant.
I feel blessed to have worked with some oof the people you mention here, and blessed to have partaken of the traditions created by tthe others. I'm lucky to have known Stepan, Higdon,Fear, to have read some of Britton.

Dear all,
I’ve written separately to Michael to say ‘way to go’. I couldn’t watch the Oscars because of the time difference. His news coupled with the recent very sad news about Lizz reminds me, once again and as if I really needed reminding, what a truly extraordinary group of people I met last summer. I read every message and ‘lurk’ on the list even when I can’t offer anything specific. It’s a way of remembering the huge, huge pleasure and privilege of knowing you all.
Love, Gail

Dear All,
We will look into coming up Friday instead (I was mistaken; there's no performance Monday, so we need to change plans regardless). Do you all already have tickets?
Anybody in the northeast corridor who would like to go to a New Jersey family memorial service for Lizz on Sunday March 6, let me know. It's near Trenton, I think. It's "for" family friends in the area (who of course aren't likely to go to Austin / Winedale). All are very much welcome, but I don't think the family expects a significant non-local crowd.

All but Robert J have our tickets for this Friday. You might check with him and see if he wants to trio up with you--he had a conflict he wasn't sure he could switcheroo, and I haven't heard the latest.

Dear all,
I've written separately to Michael to say 'way to go'. I couldn't watch the Oscars because of the time difference. His news coupled with the recent very sad news about Lizz reminds me, once again and as if I really needed reminding, what a truly extraordinary group of people I met last summer. I read every message and 'lurk' on the list even when I can't offer anything specific. It's a way of remembering the huge, huge pleasure and privilege of knowing you all.
Love,
Gail

At Oscar watching party; heard your name, Michael, and promptly dropped it; friends suitably impressed. Most importantly, what an amazing body of work you have amassed. Congrats; looking for you! Are you in the red dress?

Am finally at my computer, want to add my voice to the chorus. What a terrific affirmation of your taste and judgment in the pictures you champion--congratulations, Michael! So many people go through entire careers in the movie business just adding to the cultural slag heap, but you consistently find great pictures and get them out to audiences. What a good night you must have had, some well deserved fun. Wish I could be in Austin this evening--should be a great talk. xxxmaggie

*Congrats to Michael!
And . . . just read this (yes, it's 1:28 a.m., and I'm net-surfing):
Susanne Bier*'s Danish feature *In a Better World* was named best foreign-language feature. The film ranges from a refugee camp in Sudan to a Danish provincial town, where two boys strike up a friendship as they confront local bullies. Thanking the Academy, Bier also tipped her hat to SPC and its two co-heads *Michael Barker *and *Tom Bernard* for distributing the film in America.

Missing you all, Susan

However one defines spirit, Lizz's will always be there. I'm imagining a bright star over the barn on a dark summer night.
