Joking aside, very interested to hear about this group. Our friends in NH are living in a commons-type situation, though not "outside capitalism." I am ready for the geriatric commune where you don't actually retire.
Love you,

Here's a photo and cutline in today's NYTimes magazine about the environmental activist Annie Leonard. She lives in the Bay Area in a small bungalow with 10 of her closest friends living on the same street. They've taken down all the fences, share gardening duties, etc. "It's like I live in a Monet painting with all my best friends," she says.
Sounds good to me; we can just take over an entire block somewhere and hold a street fair and Shakespeare festival a couple of times a year to raise cash. I'll run the Limoncello stand:

We could have a flea market once a month to help the hoarders and downsize.... The lawyers and doctors could have booths like Lucy in Peanuts.... We could put up a few wind generators and probably create enough power for our needs just by our Shakespeare festivals. We could organically grow our fruits and vegetables and grapes! {Starting to sound like old Clarksville in Austin circa 1970s, etc.} We could have a school of free thinking - look at all the talent we have to teach! Michael could do a documentary and win the Oscar, Cannes, Sundance.... Alice could write the screenplay... O most rare visions! Thank you Jayne! Love to all, Joy

I've been very interested in communal living ever since living in a "co-op" in the west campus as an undergrad at U.T. There are a lot of efficiencies of scale. You can afford to have a garden, for example, because there are enough people that each person only has to do a small amount of the work, and you can actually put the whole crop to good use. In a group of two people, It is too much trouble to go to a farmer's market or other source of really good groceries, but in a group of 20, each person only has to go 2 or three times a year to have a weekly schedule. Cooking for 20 people is only about twice as much work as cooking for two, and you can set up a schedule where each person only cooks once every couple weeks, but you have a communal dinner cooked every night. Think of having dinner with 20 good folks every night. Okay, maybe I'm being too didactic, but I really think it's a great idea, a wonderful way to live. I,m interested if anyone is serious.

Love to all,

Here's a photo and cutline in today's NYTimes magazine about the environmental activist Annie Leonard. She lives in the Bay Area in a small bungalow with 10 of her closest friends living on the same street. They've taken down all the fences, share gardening duties, etc. "It's like I live in a Monet painting with all my best friends," she says.
Sounds good to me; we can just take over an entire block somewhere and hold a street fair and Shakespeare festival a couple of times a year to raise cash. I'll run the Limoncello stand:

Joking aside, very interested to hear about this group. Our friends in NH are living in a commons-type situation, though not “outside capitalism.” I am ready for the geriatric commune where you don’t actually retire.

*We could have a flea market once a month to help the hoarders and downsize.... *Love to all, Joy

Love you, Mag

Okay, Maggie,
I’m ready to start a collective that lives outside of capitalism. Radical commons group in residence. Wow. Headspinning.
