... that those of us who joined Michael at the W. were sitting not only with an Oscar-winning film director but also with a major Norwegian pop star and musical prodigy!
He and his wife (an actress), who are good friends of Michael's daughter Kate and her husband Thomas, are in town for SXSW -- he's playing tomorrow night at 11 p.m. at the Central Presbyterian Church, I'm going to try to go (though I have no wristband, not sure of how all that works). I finally did a bit of research on him to find out how to get to his gig.
Check out his wikipedia entry -- wow!
It was fun talking to a pop star and not having any idea who he was.

He is really an amazing composer and singer. Listen to his score and singing for the film Dan in Real Life. He will knock you out. I will try to get you a wristband. m

I loved Dan in Real Life and now have an excuse to see it again, to be reminded of the music. Thanks, you two. xo

I invite you to check out my weekly column called ³Eatiquette² in Real Eats, an iPad/iPhone/Internet magazine that¹s barely three months old. It¹s from a company called Nomad Editions. Links are below, which will take you either to the magazine itself or to a page that will allow you to get a free trial subscription. Paid subscriptions start at $6 for three months, $24 per year, and will put soy-free fake bacon in my refrigerator if I ever decide to become a vegetarian again. LEt me know if you have trouble getting the mag.
My column this week is an answer to a question from someone who wants to but is afraid to volunteer in a soup kitchen. If you choose to check it out, you¹ll find a menu at the bottom that will take you to the archive of all the issues so far, and all my columnsanswering questions about cell phones at dinner, surprise vegetarian guests and surprised hosts, screaming children in restaurants, takeout food at dinner parties, tipping in bars, talking politics at the dinner table, drinks that will make nondrinkers not feel exposed if they don¹t want to, guests helping out in the kitchen, spoon problems, etc. I have been having a LOT of fun with this, and I think it shows. I hope you will have some fun with them too, if you have time.
Whew, promotion is supposed to be snappier and briefer. I know you forgive me, and I thank you!

Spring doesn't officially start 'til Monday, but we're jumping the gun here at Real Eats with our Spring Break Issue, which features dispatches from a Guatemalan macadamia farm, the Micronesian island of Yap, Brooklyn and beyond.
Closer to home, we're marveling at photographer Alex Farnum's dreamy images of henhouses and just-laid eggs, which accompany recipes from chef Janice Cole. From baked eggs with basil-mint pesto to raspberry-swirl angel food cake, we're reminded of just how far a chicken and egg can get us.

Hm. First, THANK you for getting it, Doc. Now, how to help you.
When you log in, you should see on the home page at the top right a button that says ³My Editions.² Clicking that will take you to a thumbnail cover of Real Eats. Clicking that should take you to the current issue. To turn the pages, you use the right or left arrows on your keyboard. That works faster than clicking on a story title in the TOC, because ³they² want you to read it like a magazine.
For some exasperating reason, the Table of Contents doesn¹t list bylines or slugs, such as Eatiquette. But my column is always toward the end (the magazine¹s not very long). On the actual page it does say Eatiquette and my name. This week¹s column is called Ladling Out Love (not my title). It¹s a little uncharacteristic of the others, but you can find those others in the archive in the menu on the bottom left of the screen. I have really made playtime out of those.
Let me know if you continue to have trouble!
Hope to see you first week of April, as I mentioned. Will let you know when I have secured a car.
Much love, Alice

When you log in, you should see on the home page at the top right a button that says “My Editions.” Clicking that will take you to a thumbnail cover of Real Eats. Clicking that should take you to the current issue. To turn the pages, you use the right or left arrows on your keyboard. That works faster than clicking on a story title in the TOC, because “they” want you to read it like a magazine.
For some exasperating reason, the Table of Contents doesn’t list bylines or slugs, such as Eatiquette. But my column is always toward the end (the magazine’s not very long). On the actual page it does say Eatiquette and my name. This week’s column is called Ladling Out Love (not my title). It’s a little uncharacteristic of the others, but you can find those others in the archive in the menu on the bottom left of the screen. I have really made playtime out of those.
Let me know if you continue to have trouble!
Hope to see you first week of April, as I mentioned. Will let you know when I have secured a car.
Much love, Alice

I invite you to check out my weekly column called “Eatiquette” in Real Eats, an iPad/iPhone/Internet magazine that’s barely three months old. It’s from a company called Nomad Editions.
If you choose to check it out, you’ll find a menu at the bottom that will take you to the archive of all the issues so far, and all my columns —answering questions about cell phones at dinner, surprise vegetarian guests and surprised hosts, screaming children in restaurants, takeout food at dinner parties, tipping in bars, talking politics at the dinner table, drinks that will make nondrinkers not feel exposed if they don’t want to, guests helping out in the kitchen, spoon problems, etc. I have been having a LOT of fun with this, and I think it shows. I hope you will have some fun with them too, if you have time.
Whew, promotion is supposed to be snappier and briefer. I know you forgive me, and I thank you!

Yay!!!!!!!!! Thank YOU so much, Doc, again. It¹s just a deep pleasure to know that you are reading it. Sometimes as I write it I crack myself up and wonder if I have readers. But at this late stage in my career it¹s taught me something about writing that I¹ve always known but not on the cellular level: you have to do it for your own pleasure. Writing about Winedale was like that, and a profoundly gratifying, nurturing twelve-course meal. This is dessert.

Dears,
I invite you to check out my weekly column called ³Eatiquette² in
Real Eats, an iPad/iPhone/Internet magazine that¹s barely three mont hs old. It¹s from a company called Nomad Editions. Links are below, which will take you either to the magazine itself or to a page that will allow you to get a free trial subscription. Paid subscriptions start at $6 for three months, $24 per year, and will put soy-free fa ke bacon in my refrigerator if I ever decide to become a vegetarian again. LEt me know if you have trouble getting the mag.
My column this week is an answer to a question from someone who wants to but is afraid to volunteer in a soup kitchen. If you choose to check it out, you¹ll find a menu at the bottom that will take you to the archive of all the issues so far, and all my columnsansweri ng questions about cell phones at dinner, surprise vegetarian guests and surprised hosts, screaming children in restaurants, takeout foo d at dinner parties, tipping in bars, talking politics at the dinner table, drinks that will make nondrinkers not feel exposed if they d
on¹t want to, guests helping out in the kitchen, spoon problems, etc . I have been having a LOT of fun with this, and I think it shows. I hope you will have some fun with them too, if you have time.
Whew, promotion is supposed to be snappier and briefer. I know you forgive me, and I thank you!
Love, Alice

Spring doesn't officially start 'til Monday, but we're jumping the gun here at Real Eats with our Spring Break Issue, which features
dispatches from a Guatemalan macadamia farm, the Micronesian island of Yap, Brooklyn and beyond.
Closer to home, we're marveling at photographer Alex Farnum's dreamy images of henhouses and just-laid eggs, which accompany recipes from chef Janice Cole. From baked eggs with basil-mint pesto to raspberry- swirl angel food cake, we're reminded of just how far a chicken and egg can get us.
