Dear Ancianos,
The Oracle's Vestal Virgins are now asking for a vote!
We wanted just pants for men and pants or leggings for women, and minimal other adornments to suggest character (hats, scarves, yes, boots), in order to have as must time as possible to work on scenes, thus avoiding choosing a costume and then altering, washing, ironing, hemming, taping ... it also grew from the notion we all 21 seemed to like that we might all be on stage as much as possible, to serve whatever purpose might be needed: crowd, servants, nobles, becoming a... door, etc. This seemed an exciting idea, but we are not saying we'll do that, just reminding everyone of the idea.
Choosing owe you for those tights? (Well, you may want to use them, after all.) We've realized the committee has had weeks to mull over the idea of some uniformity underlying choices of accessories and props, but all of us have not discussed it, so let's do so!
We want to play. We don't want to worry about costumes!!!
Black/white/khaki sounds good to me as a backdrop for adornments.
But instead of tights or leggings and a top in one color, my vote would be for ANY combination of the three colors and INCLUDE skirts and pants and t-shirts, etc. For instance, a black skirt paired with a white top; khaki pants and black t-shirt; a white dress; black pants and black top; whatever. Seems like most of us could pull our costumes together from basics in our own closets and then find the adornments when we get there. That would make it easy.
Mary is right, there was no formal discussion of costumes. The idea for the fabric swatches came from an informal side discussion Kathy and I had. I think Kathy might have talked with a few of the committee members about it? I'm bringing the fabric whether we use it or not. But I think some of it will be great - easy capes, tablecloths, headscarves, etc. And NO SEWING!
To recap: Any combination of white, black, khaki. Pants, skirts, t-shirts, other tops, dresses, etc. That's my vote. But I'll go along with the crowd!

I agree with Jayne re any combination of these "tops and bottoms" - would pass on the mandatory tights concept (too damn hot even when I was a mere youth) and LOVE the swatch idea, cant wait to play with it (assuming that I can learn my lines)

I go with Jayne! A kind of easy going neutral color scheme that we don't have to fuss over. And we can gussy it up with whatever we can find. And layer it (although we will die of the heat) so that we can go from villain (all black) to virgin (all white) to who knows what (shades of beige!)
That sounds like fun to me!
Love, Terry

"Nay then, let the devil wear black, for I'll have a suit of sables!" Here are my thoughts on costumes:
1. I'm fine with the original concept of a costume consisting of a top and bottom of the same color--white, black or khaki--and I'm equally comfortable with Jayne's suggestion below of ANY combination of those three colors with flexibility on type (e.g., t-shirts, dresses, etc.). For my costume, I was thinking of a pair of black cotton yoga pants, which seem to have a timeless quality and are comfortable, and a black cotton shirt. But a cautionary note about khaki--the Wikipedia entry (yea, Mike!) for that color identifies no fewer than thirteen shades or variants. If you choose khaki, choose wisely.
2. I also have no problem with plundering the costume stash at Winedale but do confess an ineptitude in the sewing department. When we did Hamlet in 1983, I think either John Rando or Brian Foster (or maybe Mark Bouler) saw me sitting in front of a sewing machine and said "'Seams,' Madam. Nay, ...I know not 'seams'"
3. I would prefer a bit of flexibility as to footwear choices but that may be because my sandals are really ugly.
4. On the subject of costumes, I welcome input as to Tom Snout's wall costume. Living in Brooklyn, I find it hard to imagine a wall without at least some graffiti and signage and thought it might be fun to have such stuff on on the wall, e.g., "PUCK!" or "Queen Mab Wuz Here" or "DOC ROCKS!" and perhaps a reproduction of an old Winedale poster, an ad for Shiner Beer, etc. Don't want to overdo it and maybe it's better to stick with just a plain ole wall, but let me know what you think.
Bob

Love love love the idea of graffiti and such on "wall"--which I think can be as simple as a sheet of cloth, or as Terry suggested a "canvas brick wall" how wonderful!! Terry would you mind graffiti on your canvas brick wall or should we (or can we--it would probably be great fun) make a new one??....

There is some tragic lesson here.

Will I still be able to wear my lion's tail? (if I can find it)

Again at the risk of reaffirming that I am slow of study, as you saying I should order some tights and leotards of different colors? No problem just need to know.... Someone please advise and Kathy I'd love to see those "cute little things" you made (little)bothers me that whatever. It would Anon my darlings! This is going to be a real SHE BANG!
Love, Terry

Love love love the idea of graffiti and such on "wall"--which I think can be as simple as a sheet of cloth, or as Terry suggested a "canvas brick wall" how wonderful!! Terry would you mind graffiti on your canvas brick wall or should we (or can we--it would probably be great fun) make a new one??....

I suggest our shoes be black and soft--some sort of slipper or canvas sneaker, maybe? Then there'll be no tromping noises drowning us out as we tread the boards.

Truly, the only black shoes I have are some very dressing black&silver sandals....some flip flops, some short heeled black slipper sandals... Nevertheless, will try an so something. We could decorate our sandals with ribbons or different color bows made from the swathes....
I think 'we're starting to create a bit of a hippie flower pot but let's not stop now....our juices are starting to flow....Can David bring in some flowers from California? (and by the way, who are the Vestal Virgins?).... I have Procol Harmen's Lighter Shade of Pale....also the rendition by Annie Lennox I think.... but I now am about 5 bubbles off plumb and tired.
