Tara and Lizz in Barn dressing room, 2010 Reunion Day Hey everyone -- I tried sending this earlier, but got a msg that it'd bounced back -- trying again. James called this morning to let me know that Lizz had passed away yesterday at a hospital in Albuquerque. She'd had another seizure of some kind. I'm not sure if she ever awoke from the coma. Some friends and Winedalers are gathering tonight (Sunday) at the Dog & Duck at 8 p.m. to be together and share remembrances. I think there are plans for memorial gatherings upcoming. I believe her ashes will be scattered at Winedale by her mother and sister sometime next week. I don't know the details on that yet. Susan sent me this photo -- if others have good photos from this summer, or other times spent with Lizz, could you begin gathering them? I'm sure someone will be working on a memorial board of some kind for the Barn for this spring and summer. my best to everyone, clayton

I did not know Liz but am deeply moved by the words about her over this past week and I can feel this immense sense of loss. Will try to attend the service on the 12th. On another note, I also wanted to let you know that I am coming to Austin to speak about my career in the movie business on Monday, Feb 28. If anyone is free to go and interested in coming let me know as I will make sure your name is at the door. Apparently it is being filmed so I have to be careful not to trash too many people. Location and time: 6pm. Studio 4D Communications Building (CMB) at the corner of Guadalupe and Deen Keaton Just let me know. Would love to see you. I am only in town for 24 hours so if I miss you while I am there, I will try to catch up with you all when I am in Austin for sxsw. with love, m

March 12 Winedale gathering for Lizz K.

Dear All, We've finally got an official date for a gathering at Winedale to celebrate and honor Lizz Ketterer. It will be March 12th. I wanted to share this information, even though times and details are not set yet, so that people (particularly interested out-of-towners) could make plans. Josh Strong and Kathryn and I will be working out details, in consultation with Alison Ketterer (Lizz's sister) and anybody else who wants or needs to be involved. Music, potluck, and happy memories for all are the general idea, and afternoon is the probable general time frame. Ashes will not be scattered at Winedale at this occasion, in part because Lizz's mother won't make the trip (though Alison will). For people on the east coast, there is a service in New Jersey on March 6th at noon, First Baptist Church in Bordentown. To clarify, there may be something this weekend (the 26th) after all, but I don't have any information about it. Kathryn will be in Austin, and then we'll both be in Austin March 9-13. Virginia's roses

I now have not only an OK for the pose planting from Barbara White at Wnedale but an offer from them to help. So we are on go. So I am suggesting now that we plant the roses on Tuesday (not Wednesday), March 15, so that Maggie Megaw can help. So reserve the date. Doc

Spring Break is (Sunday) March 13-29 (Sunday). We could schedule the planting for Wednesday, March 16, if that suits the prospective gardeners. I have written Barbara White at Winedale to tell her of the project and asked her to clear the way for it. As soon as I hear approval from her, I will write again. In the meantime, be cool. Dear Shakespeare at Winedale students: I learned today that one of our most devoted friends, Virginia Elverson, has been diagnosed with terminal colon and liver cancer. As some of you remember, Virginia was a close friend of Miss Ima. I met her the same day I met Miss Ima, October 8, '70, at Winedale. She and her husband, Robin, were the first presidents of the Friends of Winedale and they were the first to establish a scholarship for Shakespeare at Winedale. Virginia not only funded the rose gardens along the front fences of the property and the vegetable garden inside but dug the holes and planted. In 2000, she was astonished to find that everything she began had died and had disappeared through neglect. They have never been replaced. The current administration of the property had ignored that. She vowed never to give anything to Winedale again. But she has remained a very strong supporter of Sha at W. And has attended the galas and bought the wooden cows. She is indeed our tie with the beginning and now we are losing her. Alice went to elementary school with her daughter, Ginny. And just a lot of you will remember swimming in their pond near Winedale (especially Maggie, our token olympic swimmer). I would really like to see those roses on the fence again, growing. This has not been a very happy week. We have lost Professor Douglas Parker, who wrote the very first evaluation/review of Shakespeare at Winedale in '72. And we learned just this week about our colleague, Lizz Ketterer, in a coma in New Mexico. Please keep all of these in your thoughts. Doc
