Hello all,
I plan to let switch the address tools.wikimedia.de from zedler to hemlock on sunday 12:00 (UTC). So please test your tools on hemlock, if not allready done, and report errors to the bugzilla on hemlock (please do not use the mediawiki-one ;)).
If there are big problems, the data can certainly moved.
Sincerly, DaB.
Will any files be copied at that point?
Would it be possible to have some short Apache downtime during the switchover? Would it be possible for you to copy the contents of /home/interiot/persistent/optinout/ from Zedler to Hemlock while the Apaches are down? That directory contains files that are updated by end-users via CGI, and it would be good to not miss any changes to this directory on either zedler or hemlock.

I try it. There are 2 problem: The first is, that not I make the switch, but akl. The secound problem is, that dns-datas are allways cached a time. So a few user with old dns-caches use zedler for a time and others use allready hemlock.
But the copy itself is no problem of corse :).

After the switching zedler could redirect to hemlock's long name. What about reducing dns expiration time? If the dns ttl is of some minutes on the moving that would drastically reduce this issues (now i get the dns for 1 hour, it'd be more than a few).

Yes. I will try this.

RFC 1912 define a valueset between 20 minutes and 12h, but I have never seen a system with values under 1h (perhaps because a few systems ignores values under 1h).
The bigger problem is, that the webinterface, that the verein use, do not allow the change of this value AFAIK.

RFC 1912 define a valueset between 20 minutes and 12h,
This is wrong anyway. RFC1912 recommends this range for the refresh interval of secondary nameservers (for people still using this ancient concept).
Regarding the TTL for entries, RFC1035 recommends 1 day and down to 1 hour when needed. There is however no rule which forbids values way lower. Lower values only increase load on the nameserver responsible for the zone, so only one self is harmed by choosing a very low value.

I prefer this concept, but this is like Linux<>Windows, I guess;)

As I say in the eMail before: It's AFAIK not possible to change the value in the dnsconfig-website, which the verein use (I use the same provider for my domains)..

The move is done. See no bigger problems, but please check the apache-errorlog for your tools ("grep" is very helping there ;))
