I suggest using translatewiki for the internationalization process. I'm sure Siebrand will like the idea and help us through the process.
last time i asked about this, the response was basically 'sure, but you'll have to write all the code yourself' (to parse the message files, etc). i filed a bug for it:

perhaps a good task for someone who would like to help but doesn't feel like working out how to use SVN or Python ;-)
