Hello Michael and social media elves !
As discussed, we just published a new blog post to invite our community to find great wiki articles (or images) about love:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/06/wiki-articles-about-love/
I’m excited to try out this experiment with new types of thematic user-generated content, combining social media, the wikis and the blog.
This new campaign plan — and proposed social media ideas -- is outlined here:
https://docs.google.com/a/wikimedia.org/document/d/1XxLnQGwUA5FaTeLRjRJHcqZ…
Twitter:
Help find great wiki articles about love for #ValentinesDay: what's your favorite wiki page, image, or video?
Facebook:
What is your favorite Wikipedia article (or image) about love?
As millions prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day, we'd like to know how love is covered on Wikipedia and its sister projects. Share your favorite wiki articles, pictures, or media about love -- from platonic to fraternal or romantic. We'll post some of your top picks here on Friday Feb. 13, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Please add your suggestions below, and include a sentence or two about why you picked it!
Learn more on this wiki page: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/06/wiki-articles-about-love/
Thanks for sharing the love :)
Feel free to tweak as you see fit. I defer to you all to determine the best way to get the word out in social networks. Be sure to add final links to the Google doc linked above.
Once we’ve heard from the team, I propose to send an email later today to a few friendly mailing lists like @wmfall, @techambassadors, @editorengagement, @multimedia, as well as to my own community champion contacts. But I will wait to do that until you’ve all commented on this proposal.
I hope we’ll learn a thing or two about new ways to engage our community in user-generated content lists, which can inform our next campaigns. :)
Thanks for sharing the love :)
Fabrice

Dear Michael and social media team,
We just published a blog post about the first ‘wikimarathon' on Spanish scientists:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/06/first-wikimarathon-spanish-scientists/
Thanks to Rubèn for writing this uplifting story and and sharing it with our community!
Here are some ideas for sharing on social networks:
Twitter (@wikimedia/@wikipedia):
First Wikimarathon on Spanish scientists shows participants of all ages how to edit Wikipedia. (link)
Facebook/Google+
Wikimedia Spain held its first Wikimarathon on Spanish scientists last December, working with 6 different museums across Spain. Participants of all ages learned how to edit Wikipedia, making over 700 edits about Spanish scientists and inventors. (link)
Rubèn was kind enough to also translate these into Spanish for us:
• El primer Wikimaratón sobre científicos españoles enseña a participantes de todas las edades cómo editar en Wikipedia.
• Wikimedia España celebró su primer Wikimaratón sobre científicos españoles el pasado mes de diciembre, trabajando con 6 museos de toda España. Participantes de todas las edades aprendieron cómo editar en Wikipedia, haciendo más de 700 ediciones sobre científicos e inventores españoles.
Please tweak and help spread the word about this story. :)
Thanks!
Fabrice

Hey Michael and social media elves,
We are about to publish a blog post about the Ukrainian Wikipedia's 11th anniversary, which will be at this URL:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/05/ukrainian-wikipedia-anniversary/
The original draft is still here on Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Blog/Drafts/One_in_five_thousand
Here are some ideas for how to spread the word on social networks:
Twitter (@wikimedia/@wikipedia):
• The Ukrainian Wikipedia celebrates its 11th anniversary this week. Here's how it has changed over time. (link)
• The Ukrainian Wikipedia celebrates its 11th anniversary this week. Interview with WMUA Founder Yuri Perohanych. (link)
Facebook/Google+
• The Ukrainian Wikipedia celebrates its 11th anniversary this week. In this interview, Wikimedia Ukraine founder Yuri Perohanych discusses how it has changed and the challenges it faces. (...)
Please help us get the word out about this story by tweaking the social media before it goes out. :)
Andrew and I aim to publish it within the hour.
Thanks!
Fabrice

Hi everyone,
Firstly, this email is a bit of a departure from the usual, but I hope it
isn't off-topic and this discussion will be useful for others!
This is mainly targetted at those who run social media accounts for Wiki
events.
Using Wikimania as an example, I notice that Wikimania has multiple
presences on Facebook - pages, groups, events. I assume we are all broadly
familiar with the technical differences, but for those who are involved
with these at a practical level - how is it working out?
I notice each year has a new "page"; as well (this year and last year) an
associated "event" page:
https://www.facebook.com/wikimania2013 / (no event)
https://www.facebook.com/Wikimania2014 /
https://www.facebook.com/events/569375129849190https://www.facebook.com/wikimania2015 /
https://www.facebook.com/events/367859576719817
I was surprised that there was a new page set up each year - losing
valuable followers. I guess bid teams want to set up their own page to
promote their bid before it is confirmed (as well as promote it in the
period prior to the event before theirs). It seems the URL
https://www.facebook.com/wikimania is taken by a profile of someone
completely unrelated. Was this an influence in going down the "annual new
page" route?
Other questions:
Has anyone found downsides to this page/event paired arrangement? Unneeded
duplication?
Would you recommend running it as an "event" page only in future?
Pages offer features such as analytics, etc - but is a separate page
worthwhile for a one off event?
Any insights greatly appreciated :)

Hi social media team,
I think this would be a great story for social media, and I thought we had posted it already, but don’t see it on our Wikipedia Twitter account.
Here’s what I tweeted on my personal account, in case it’s helpful:
Meet the Ultimate WikiGnome: the story of one of @Wikipedia's top editors, featuring ex-colleague @StevenWalling https://medium.com/backchannel/meet-the-ultimate-wikignome-10508842caadhttps://twitter.com/fabriceflorin/status/563095938060021763
Feel free to retweet — or develop our own message, as you prefer.
Tip of the hat to Andrew Lih for sharing it with us ...
Cheers,
Fabrice

Hi guys,
We just published a new blog post about the European Union Copyright
Reform, which you can view at this url.
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/04/european_copyright_reform/
Thanks to Dimitar Dimitrov from Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU for
creating this story.
Bellow are some proposed social media messages for this story. Please tweak
as needed. This is my first time communicating directly to the Social Media
team as a Communications intern. I look forward to your feedback.
Twitter (@wikimedia):
The EU Copyright Reform could solve core issues for Wikimedia. If we manage
to keep them in the proposal. Action required!

The new European Commission is working on a copyright reform proposal this
year. Here's a report on what this could mean for the Wikimedia movement.
It could solve core issues for us, if we manage to keep them in the

Hi guys,
We just published this new blog post about which external sites link to Wikipedia:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/03/who-links-to-wikipedia/
Thanks to Gianluca Demartini from the University of Sheffield for preparing this story!
We’ve proposed below some social media messaging ideas. Please discuss and tweak as needed!
Twitter:
Who links to Wikipedia? An analysis of the external link structure using @CommonCrawl data by @eglu81 #datascience
Facebook/Google+:
Who links to Wikipedia? To find out, University of Sheffield researchers analyzed the structure of links that point to Wikipedia pages from external websites. Here's what they learned.
I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce Andrew Sherman, our new Digital Communications Intern.
Andrew will work closely with us on the blog this semester — and will also contribute to social media, video production, and more.
We are really excited to have him on board: welcome, Andrew!
Best regards,
Fabrice
