Hi everyone,
Earlier this year, the Creative Commons Copyright Platform
<https://network.creativecommons.org/cc-copyright-platform-activity-fund/>
formed
four working groups to undertake an exploration of policy issues affecting
the open ecosystem, in line with the Creative Commons 2021-2026 strategy
<https://creativecommons.org/2020/12/16/announcing-our-new-strategy-whats-ne…>.
These four working groups exist to address four policy themes, including 1)
artificial intelligence and open content, 2) platform liability, 3)
copyright exceptions and limitations, 4) the ethics of open sharing. You
can learn more about each of these groups and their charges in this CC blog
post
<https://creativecommons.org/2021/05/25/four-creative-commons-working-groups…>
.
We are writing to you today as representatives of Working Group 4 on the
ethics of open sharing. We have been drafting a short white paper
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GRx7V2utoVV-bd2ALzYv5fSxlIMNmMHAftEHHPb…>
that
outlines some of the most pertinent and pressing questions and use cases
involving the ethics of open sharing, and we’d like to ask you and the
members of your community to join us in an open consultation to review and
provide comments and feedback on this document.
The goal is to get wide-ranging input about these thorny but essential
questions at the crossroads of ethics and open sharing. This paper will be
published on Creative Commons’ Medium publication
<https://medium.com/creative-commons-we-like-to-share> and outcomes will be
shared in a public webinar hosted by CC on 9 November, 2021. Details on how
to join the webinar will be shared soon, stay tuned!
The consultation is open until Sunday, 24 October, 2021.

Thank you for your help as we work together to create and build the future
of open sharing.

Dear friend
Welcome to Hack4OpenGLAM
<https://summit.creativecommons.org/hack4openglam-2021/>, a co-creation
event for working towards *Open Access to cultural heritage*. The event
brings together content communities, GLAM professionals, advocates of open
cultural heritage, digital creators, and tools or platform developers
– from newcomers to experts – to learn, work, and create with one another.
It is part of the CC Global Summit <https://summit.creativecommons.org/>
20–24 September 2021.
The event focuses on knowledge equity: Highlighting knowledge of
individuals, communities, and cultures who have been left out of the
spotlight of history, decolonizing cultural historical collections, and
acknowledging responsible ways of sharing information online openly.
We are looking for
-
Projects. A project can be as sketchy as an idea or a topic, or as
detailed as an existing project. It can be a call-to-action around a task
or a challenge to solve a problem.
-
Open collections at GLAM institutions or community archives and their
enthusiastic maintainers to participate in co-creation.
-
Digital creators from artists to developers, working with open platforms
and technologies.
-
Tools & platforms that enable this work, and their developers.
The registration is now open <https://okf.fi/hack4openglam2021-register>. In
the weeks and months leading to the event, we arrange weekly meetups on
Thursdays at 1pm <https://dateful.com/eventlink/3350245692> where project
ideas can be shared and discussed, and we will further promote them in
newsletters and tweets. You can read in more detail how the event is
arranged by checking out the webpage
<https://summit.creativecommons.org/hack4openglam-2021/>, or in the latest This
Month in GLAM
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/June_2021/Contents/Spec…>.
Last year’s contributions can be viewed on the Hack4OpenGLAM 2020 Dashboard
<https://summit.creativecommons.org/hack4openglam-dashboard/>.
Opportunities
1. We are looking for two energetic *facilitators* to join the organizing
team during August–September. The facilitators participate in hosting the
live program, facilitating collaboration, and guiding volunteers.
2. To better realize global equity, we are also looking for *regional
ambassadors* to reach out to GLAMs and contributors in their area and
domain.
Read more about the opportunities on the web page
<https://summit.creativecommons.org/hack4openglam-2021/> and apply before
18 July at http://okf.fi/h4og21-jobs.
Hack4OpenGLAM is produced by AvoinGLAM
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AvoinGLAM> / Creative Commons Finland
<https://creativecommons.fi/>, and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation.
Looking forward to hacking heritage together!

Hi everyone,
If you or someone you know is interested in taking the online CC GLAM [Beta
Test] Certificate <https://certificates.creativecommons.org/> course in
September 2021, we still have a few spaces remaining.
You can register here
<https://certificates.creativecommons.org/about/packages/> (direct link
<https://www.classy.org/event/cc-certificate-course-registration/e303524>).
The CC GLAM Certificate provides an in-depth study of Creative Commons
licenses and open practices in the GLAM sector, uniquely developing
participants’ open licensing proficiency and understanding of the broader
context for open advocacy. The curriculum targets copyright law, CC legal
tools, how GLAM institutions open their cultural works, as well as the
values and good practices of working in a global, shared commons. The CC
Certificate is offered as a 10-week online course for GLAM community
members, educators, and academic librarians.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best wishes,
Brigitte

*Brigitte Vézina* — Director of Policy, Open Culture and GLAM
Creative Commons
Dear colleagues,
As you might know, Creative Commons is expanding our offerings for the Creative
Commons Certificate <https://certificates.creativecommons.org/>, a training
program about open licensing and ways to engage in our global, shared
digital commons. While we currently teach two CC Certificate courses (one
for educators and one for academic librarians). We are currently “alpha”
testing a Certificate for GLAM audiences that supports cultural heritage
institutions in releasing their content under CC licenses and tools, where
applicable.
We anticipate offering an “beta” test of the GLAM Certificate starting
September
27, 2021. Like the other CC Certificate courses, the GLAM Certificate will
be a 10-week long online course. It’s rigorous, and will require an average
of 6-10 hours of work per week.
If you or a representative from your organization would like to take part
in the “beta” cohort, we have select tickets open.
Taking the CC Certificate for GLAM beta training entails the following:
- Participation in the 10-week online course; including asynchronous
reading, practical exercises, discussions, assignments and a final project.
Also including optional synchronous discussions and webinars;
- Facilitation and expert review of participant course activities
(excluding ungraded activities such as quizzes, and optional discussions);
- Engagement in feedback surveys, and prompts.
- Participants who receive 90/100 points or more on their graded activities
(discussions, assignments and a final project) will receive a CC
Certificate.
Because this is a beta test of the GLAM Certificate, it will only be open
to 25 people. We will (1) reduce the $500 USD course fee to $250, and (2)
request a fair amount of feedback before making revisions for future
courses.
We are reaching out now given the significant time commitment the course
will require. If you or a representative from your institution would like
to participate in the beta test, please let us know by or before May 31 via
email to: certificates(a)creativecommons.org, and scannopolis(a)gmail.com. We
will provide a discount code for registration requests within around 3
business days (as long as tickets last). Thank you.
Best,
Jennryn
