Hi all,
I wanted to share the results of our latest round of usability testing with the current version of the Media Viewer. As a really quick summary we can say that the basic design concept and the way we present information and controls seem to work, while some aspects such as the connection with Commons info page and license details need more clarity.
To get more details check the notes at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Multimedia/Media_Viewer/Usability_testing
The idea is to keep testing periodically as new features are added to the Media Viewer and new prototypes are built for future features.
Feel free to circulate the participation form linkhttps://docs.google.com/a/wikimedia.org/spreadsheet/viewform?usp=drive_web&formkey=dGJRaFRfM0l3cUc0M1VpUDhqdHBrbFE6MQ#gid=0 to those users that may be interested in testing new multimedia features.
thanks
Yikes, it's scary how many things in our sites folks get confused by... it surprises me every time I see one of these videos. Also shows that much of UI experience is in the details, not so much in the bigger picture...
What I liked was that the small 'dock bounce' made one of the users notice that there was 'something happening' there.
Perhaps we can do the bounce animation again if people hover the panel ? so don't totally move it up, just extend the page by the bounce height when people open the page, a bit similar to the left/right buttons ?

Hi Derk-Jan,
Thanks for your interest on the testing results.
Perhaps we can do the bounce animation again if people hover the panel ?
Currently we are displaying the animation only for users that have not opened the panel before. We do this each time they enter the Media Viewer, but not when they move next/previous. I think that provides a good prominence level to allow discoverability without being too annoying. Most users will not even need this since we are providing multiple entry points (scroll, keyboard arrows, and chevron pointing up in the panel).
Moving the panel up on hover makes sense from a continuity perspective, my concern is that it may present issues if the user tries to click on specific targets (e.g., a link which is part of the title, the author name, or reuse icon on the right) and fails to do so because of the movement.
Having said that, we'll keep testing with users and explore design solutions to improve the issues we find, and what you suggest is worth considering if we need to make the panel more prominent. So thanks for your feedback and interest on the project.

Hi all,
I have updated the testing results with a new round of testing at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Multimedia/Media_Viewer/Usability_testing
Results are not much different since last round. Results were positive, and most of the issues found are already part of the team backlog to be solved at some point: Increasing the first-time discoverability of the metadata panel (#554https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/554), unclarity on how to attribute the author (#220https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/220), need for a direct link for 3rd-party insert by URL (considered in original designs of share panel), and clearly communicate that Commons contains more technical detail about the image.
