We have now finished adding support for the LaTeX commands:
- \phantom
- \vphantom
- \hphantom
It is now live on production.
Many thanks to Moritz Schubotz for all their work on this.

Dear Community Group Math,
as an applied project in the Information Retrieval Lecture [1] at the
University of Wuppertal offered by gipplab [2] students implemented a
new feature for Wikipedia that simplifies the linking of formulae and
Wikidata items.
As described in [3, Section 2] it was possible to link Wikidata items
with formulae in Wikipedia since 2020. However, this linking was only
possible when using the source code editor. Now, one can link the
Wikidata item and the formulae visually (see screenshot attached). The
Wikibase ID beginning with Q identifies an item in the knowledge graph
that contains additional semantics for the formulae which can
subsequently be used to improve accessibility or search for
mathematical formulae. Currently, the workflow is that one has to
search for the Wikibase ID which describes the formulae best and copy
that id into the new field in the form. To eliminate this context
switch, the student team will improve the user experience further by
providing auto-completion so that the formula name can be entered
rather than the id.
Another group is focused on automating this process even further and
suggesting suitable ids based on the AnnoMathTex [4] transforming the
manual task of assigning ids into a supervised machine learning task.
However, this feature will require a special setup and not be enabled
by default for all users of Wikipedia.
All the best
Moritz

Subject: BOT Election: Affiliate representative information needed.
To: <andre.greiner-petter(a)t-online.de>, Moritz Schubotz <wiki(a)physikerwelt.de>
Dear Affiliate,
I am reaching out to you today about the upcoming affiliate
involvement in the Board of Trustees election. The opportunity to ask
questions to candidates is coming soon. The affiliate voting period is
from 1 - 15 July. During that time, each affiliate is allowed one vote
to shortlist the group of 13 candidates to 6.
Each affiliate must identify one person to represent the affiliate
question and voting phase. This representative will pose the questions
the affiliate might have to ask the candidates and will cast the vote
on behalf of the affiliate organization.
Please reply to this email letting us know who your representative is.
Please do this by 30 May 2022.
We need the username, their email address and which affiliate they
will be representing. Unfortunately, representatives cannot represent
more than one affiliate in this election. Be sure the username
provided is correct because these usernames will be entered into
SecurePoll for voting. Without the correct information, the user will
not be able to vote or will be delayed in voting.
Key dates to remember
30 May 2022 - Deadline to submit your affiliate representative’s
username and email address.
(If you cannot submit this information by May 30, let us know).
June 2022 - Representatives ask candidates questions and review
answers to inform their vote.
The Analysis Committee publishes their ratings of candidates to inform voters.
1 - 15 July 2022 - Representatives vote in the Affiliate voting period.
Best,

Dear all,
as part of the community survey, we are planning to add support for the
LaTeX command \phantom.
Please refer to
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T261215
for the details.
Please speak up until next week (May 17th) if you have any concerns or
questions, either via email or by commenting on the ticket.

Dear Math(ML) enthusiasts,
mathematical expressions are essential building blocks for the
representation of mathematical knowledge in Wikimedia Projects and
elsewhere.
To coordinate the maintenance and development of tools relevant to the
global mathematical community the
Wikimedia Community Group Math [1]
was established in 2019.
Ultimately, the group's mission is to decide on pragmatic steps
towards the goal of making mathematical knowledge easily accessible to
every human being.
In 2021, some implementation details of the caching mechanism of the
Math rendering pipeline had been updated to the latest software
development paradigms employed in Wikimedias codebase. In addition,
Wikimedia joined the W3C MathML working to pave the ground for native
and accessible Math rendering in browsers without workarounds like
images or special text formatting to match mimic math rendering.
For 2022, the goal is to further simplify the rendering process of
mathematical expressions and to continue the work on the MathML 4
standard [2]. Moreover, we aim to facilitate more active participation
in discussing the next steps in Math-related developments for
Wikimedia projects. Therefore, we strive to further maximize our
geographical and gender diversity.
In contrast to 2021, where most improvements remain under the hood of
the Math extension codebase [3], in 2022, there are even a few
achievements this year.
- We have a new Wikimedia hosted mailing list math(a)lists.wikimedia.org
(if you were subscribed to the old mailing list, you should have been
transferred to the new mailing list)
- Math is now bundled within the default distribution of MediaWiki [4]
- The rendering of \omicron was fixed
If you receive this email but you did not sign up for any of the
mailing lists in the recipient list, you might be in the BCC field and
want to subscribe to our new mailing list [5];-)
All the best
André and Moritz
