Dear Community Group Math,
as an applied project in the Information Retrieval Lecture [1] at the
University of Wuppertal offered by gipplab [2] students implemented a
new feature for Wikipedia that simplifies the linking of formulae and
Wikidata items.
As described in [3, Section 2] it was possible to link Wikidata items
with formulae in Wikipedia since 2020. However, this linking was only
possible when using the source code editor. Now, one can link the
Wikidata item and the formulae visually (see screenshot attached). The
Wikibase ID beginning with Q identifies an item in the knowledge graph
that contains additional semantics for the formulae which can
subsequently be used to improve accessibility or search for
mathematical formulae. Currently, the workflow is that one has to
search for the Wikibase ID which describes the formulae best and copy
that id into the new field in the form. To eliminate this context
switch, the student team will improve the user experience further by
providing auto-completion so that the formula name can be entered
rather than the id.
Another group is focused on automating this process even further and
suggesting suitable ids based on the AnnoMathTex [4] transforming the
manual task of assigning ids into a supervised machine learning task.
However, this feature will require a special setup and not be enabled
by default for all users of Wikipedia.
All the best
Moritz
