Xest Skwekwst!, Hello Kevin,
Congratulations to you and Sarah both!
As you probably know, UC Berkeley has amazing holdings in Native American and other indigenous languages, and is home to the The Survey of California and Other Indian Languages. I did a bit of research there back in the day for some Kuna Indian friends, and they were really happy with what I found for them.
I've also updated *a bunch* of Wikipedia articles from the UCB site:
http://www.linguistics.berkeley.edu/Survey/
Native American languages still survive, but you wouldn't necessarily realize this, as they are a really underrepresented area in US culture everywhere, including Wikipedia. Can I interest you and Sarah in making the connections needed at UCB, and taking the lead over at WikiProject Indigenous languages of California?

Congratulations again,
Shey hoy!

PS One more thing for Kevin-- Given that you are a relatively young guy, this makes it *way easier* for you to pick up a Native American language than it is for a person my age. Ever considered it?

Hi all -
I have talked about this in bits and places elsewhere, but as I finally have a finalized signed contract in hand, I figured I'd make an actual announcement about it. Officially effective today, I am the Wikipedian-in-Residence for the American Culture Program at the University of California, Berkeley. American Cultures at Berkeley is a program centered on the study of race, ethnicity, and culture in the United States
- a lot of what I will be doing will be centered around very closely
supervising USEP classes in under-represented areas, but I'll also working on other related issues, such as trying to arrange media donations, trying to document best practices, etc - as well as tackling other projects that have yet to be thought of!
Wikipedians-in-Residence have previously focused almost entirely on GLAM institutions, and as far as I know, I'm the first WiR at a University. I'm hoping that this will end up being a productive collaboration that sets up the groundwork for future WiR positions at other Universities. I know UCB will be trying to set up some press later in the month, and I intend to meticulously document my residency, make my materials available for reuse, etc.
Since my duties aren't set in stone yet, I'd also strongly welcome suggestions for additional projects to take on - since I'm based out of the AC center, most work I do should be focused on areas that are currently under-represented on Wikipedia, but that can cover an awful lot of ground.
Best, Kevin Gorman
Hi Kristin -
As much as I wish it wasn't the case, I have a medical condition that, among many other things, makes it really really challenging for me to learn new languages (I had to be in speech therapy just to learn to pronounce English words intelligibly until probably fourth grade.) I'd love to pick up a Native American language, but learning new languages is about the one thing in my life that I've consistently done poorly at no matter how many hours I've poured in to trying to do.
I probably won't have time to take over the Wikiproject, but I'm more than happy to help with any work that is easier done by someone who is physically by Berkeley, or to make any introductions that would be easier done by someone with an official UCB affiliation, etc. As excited as I am to have an official position with Berkeley, the funding is unfortunately limited, and as a recent college grad, I do need to cobble together enough separate projects to feed myself ;). I *do* potentially have at least a little time to work with the Native American Studies department here to at least some extent, so I'll reach out to their departmental liason at some point within the next couple of weeks.
Best, Kevin Gorman

Awesome work you continue to amaze me with Kristin!!
I am too swamped with wiki projects but I do plan on connecting with native studies folks while at UCB (I have a BA in native studies and my "non wiki" research work focuses on Native people in public history and culture)...
So we shall see what happens and I appreciate you sharing your work with me / I will share it with UCB folks.
Sarah
Sent from my IPhone, so I have an excuse for errors..right? ;-)
