Hi, Ambassadors!
One of our fellow Ambassadors (and a past instructor), Adrianne, is hosting
"Ask a WikiWoman" on Twitter right now (see details below). Many of you
know Adrianne, as she has been extremely involved in the Education Program
and helping create resources for professors, Ambassadors, and students.
Some of you may know that the Education Program is one of the leading
groups to bring women onto Wikipedia, since there are so many women at
universities. So if you're on Twitter today (and, you know you are :) ),
let's support Adrianne and pick her brain about what it's like to be a
female Wikipedian!
Thanks, all. Let's #askawikiwoman!
Jami

Subject: [Wmfall] Ask a WikiWoman is happening now!
To: "Staff (All)" <wmfall(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that #askawikiwoman is taking place on Twitter right now. I
know many of us are wiki-know-it-all's, but, this is an experimental event
that we're trying out as part of my fellowship :)
It'd be great to have you ask Dr. Adrianne Wadewitz (User:Wadewitz)
anything and everything about Wikipedia!
Simply use the hashtag #askawikiwoman on Twitter and Adrianne will answer
your question via the @WikiWomen Twitter.
https://twitter.com/WikiWomen
Adrianne will be online from 10-5 answering questions.
Please forward to any groups or individuals you think might want to
participate. Thanks everyone.
Sarah

Blog profiles design professor in Brazil
The Wikimedia Foundation blog recently published a profile of Iara Camargo, a professor of design in Brazil who participated in the Wikipedia Education Program last term. She joined students in her Editorial Design course in improving articles on the Portuguese Wikipedia about subjects such as designers, design concepts, and publishing houses. Iara wrote an article on book design as part of her work with her students. Learn more about her experiences by reading the post.

Program update from Wikimedia Argentina
Wikimedia Argentina has been hard at work on encouraging the use of Wikipedia in education for several years. In 2010, they published a brochure in Spanish titled "Wikipedia en el aula", or Wikipedia in the classroom. Last month, they released a translated version of the brochure in Guarani, an indigenous language spoken by people in northeastern Argentina, southern Brazil, western Bolivia, and Paraguay. The Spanish version is so popular that the Argentine government highlighted it in a space on their education website. See more about the program.

U.S. student achieves Good Article on Mu wave
Ingrid Haugen, a recent graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago, was excited to learn that in her final term of work, she would be taking a class participating in the Association for Psychological Sciences Wikipedia Initiative. Ingrid's professor, Lisa Lu, asked Ingrid and her classmates to work together to improve articles related to brain and behavior on the English Wikipedia. Ingrid chose to work on the article Mu wave, and though her and her classmates' efforts, the article achieved Good Article status in December. Learn more about Ingrid's work.

Final call for spring U.S. and Canada participants
The new term is upon us, and many professors and Ambassadors have already begun using the new MediaWiki education extension. If you are a professor who plans to use Wikipedia in the classroom this term, please make sure you have been in touch with a Wikipedia Education Program representative for the next steps. To finalize your assignment, create a Course Page, and pair with an Ambassador for your students, please fill out this Google Doc interest form by Thursday, January 17.
https://contacts.wikimedia.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=8…
If you are an Ambassador, even if you will not be active this term, you must receive the appropriate user rights and create a profile as either an Online Ambassador or a Campus Ambassador with the new extension. Then you will be able to sign on to any courses you will be supporting and monitor student contributions. To request user rights, please see this page.

Hi, Ambassadors!
This is just a reminder that if you have any professors you're planning to
work with in incorporating a Wikipedia assignment into the class this
semester, please have them either fill out this interest form[1] OR, if
they've worked with you to complete the assignment design, they can begin
the Course Page process[2], which you should note is new for this semester!
Also, you should ping the relevant Regional Ambassador if you have not yet
been given the user rights on-wiki that you'll need to access those course
pages!
Thanks for everything, and don't hesitate to ask any questions or send any
professors who'd like more information my way or to your Regional
Ambassador!
Jami

Trophy Case highlights excellent student work
Professors and Ambassadors who worked with students in the United States and Canada program in 2012 have added a series of links to the new Trophy Case, which highlights the best student work. The Trophy Case includes categories for articles that were featured on the English Wikipedia's main page in the Did You Know section, those that have achieved Good Article status, high quality new articles, significantly expanded existing articles, and non-textual contributions. See the Trophy Case, and add other student work you see to it.

Worldwide resources page created on outreach wiki
A centralized repository of information for participants in the Wikipedia Education Program worldwide has been created on the outreach wiki's education portal. Broken down into information by target audience, such as instructors and students, the page contains links to brochures, handouts, and videos available in multiple languages. Handouts created specifically for Wikipedia Education Program participants in any language are welcome. See the page.

Professor blogs about experiences with Wikipedia
Gilly Leshed, a professor at Cornell University, has written a post for the Wikimedia Foundation blog on her experiences participating in the United States Education Program. Her students study online communities, she writes, and what better way to make them understand such a community than to ask them to join one? Her students wrote articles on Wikipedia, and through the process learned about what it means to participate in an active online community like Wikipedia. Read her blog post to learn more about their experiences.
