So I felt that "mate" implies more than friendship, but you are right,
friendship should never get in the way of simply putting the interests of the organization
first.

Just being friends with someone that has an interest in an issue can't be considered
a conflict. That would make it impossible for anyone to ever act!
If you feel unable to act appropriately in that situation, then you shouldn't be a
trustee of a charity.
