The board of Wikimedia UK is delighted to report that Roger Bamkin has signed the final agreement which formally transfers ownership of the intellectual property in QRpedia to Wikimedia UK. Accordingly, as of yesterday all of the IP rights in QRPedia are held by Wikimedia UK.
The final stage in the process is to get the Domain Name Registrars to update their online domain name records to reflect the new ownership. This is purely an administrative procedure which can now be initiated immediately.
We regret the delay in achieving this outcome for the community but we are very happy that the technology has been secured for the global Wikimedia community to use. We would like to once again thank Roger and Terence Eden for their generous donation of QRpedia intellectual property rights and for their patience during the process.

Hi all,
As Jonathan suggested some time ago, in the publicity we can offer a gift
voucher of a given value, and allow the recipient to chose what is easiest
for them. This has also been repeated once or twice. I am surprised that
we can't reach consensus around this.
That way WMUK is not taking a public stance as regards any business, and
our private views on this or that company can be discussed elsewhere.
Likewise, there would be no need to publicise how any recipient may choose
to receive their prize.
I would hope people would see this as a suitable solution.
all the best

In fact it'll encourage overseas winners to spend the NBT on books they can't buy in their home countries, thereby increasing the potential for them to contribute to Wikimedia projects on a UK-related topic.

Has the Amazon Tax avoidance been sorted Out?

I am not sure that WMUK would want to be seen endorsing Amazon if this is
not the case?

Hello everyone,
Wikimedia UK has been asked to consider signing a document supporting
these International
Principles on the Application of Human Rights to Communications
Surveillance<https://en.necessaryandproportionate.org/TEXT> In
principle I think this is worthwhile and shows that we are on the side of
the every day internet user. But some may say it is out of our scope. What
do people think? If there's a consensus I'll add Wikimedia UK to the list.
This can be discussed on this list or on the Water Cooler of the WMUK
wiki<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Water_cooler#International_Principles_on_the_…>if
you prefer.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

250 people (mostly German, Austrian and Swiss, but some others)
recently met in Karlsruhe for the annual German-language "WikiCon"
event.
Wikimedia Deutschland are quick to point out that, though they support
the event logistically and financially, it's not their's but is
community driven.
In contrast, how many people did we have at our nearest equivalent,
the WikimediaUK AGM?
Wikimania notwithstanding, how can we get more people at our future
events, and should we - from 2015 onwards - be looking at a similar
annual conference, beyond (but perhaps containing) the WMUK AGM, of
similar size, and which is open to all Wikimedians?

Some of you may recall my successful microgrant application, to obtain
a Zoom H1 digital audio recorder.
It's taken a while, but the first four files made with that device are
now on Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_generated_with_WMUK_Zoom_…
and used in the English Wikipedia articles about their respective
subjects. More are in the pipeline.
This is part of the project I started, to add recordings of article
subjects speaking, so that we know what they sound like and how they
pronounce their names:
http://pigsonthewing.org.uk/open-licensed-format-recordings-voices-wikipedi…
Files may also be uploaded by subjects, emailed to me, or uploaded by
other Wikipedians. Do you know someone who might contribute?

I've reduced the whole period to a fortnight (partly because I am not going
to have time for this closer to Christmas) so that's only two weeks. If we
exempt the overall winner from winning the vouchers, that will mean two
runner-up prizes of vouchers: one for the first week and one for the
second. I'm not sure what value of voucher would be best but, say, £10
each?
Can I go ahead and announce that WMUK will provide a Kobo and two Amazon
vouchers? (About £70 worth of prizes in total.)
There's only a few days left now. If we do this again, I will sort this
out properly with much more notice.

I would like it to draw in new people, and I've tried to find texts that
should be easy to proofread over a range of different types and subjects to
facilitate that at one end.
The contest will also be a useful learning experience. I don't know about
anything similar on Wikisource. The English subdomain 10th anniversary is
in 2015 and a Welsh contest might be practical in the near future too.
Of course, people can't take part if they don't know about it. I don't
have many ways to promote this outside Wikisource but...

I agree, this would help a lot.
I believe the instigators of this contest are going to try to advertise
this as well. I will do what I can.
