Dear all
Wikimedia UK submitted our funding proposal to the Wikimedia Foundation on
Sunday, and it is now open for community review until the end of the month,
along with the other Chapters in the same funding round. You can read the
UK (and other) proposals here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Proposals/2017-2018_round_1/Wiki…
After the community review period there is a staff assessment, and then the
deliberations and recommendations by the Funds Dissemination Committee.
With thanks to the staff and volunteers who fed into this proposal...and
fingers crossed for a positive outcome!
Best
Lucy

Dear all,
Please feel free to join us at the below events or disseminate to interested colleagues in your networks.
We have a number of events happening over the Autumn/Winter period that are all now live for booking and you are more than welcome to attend any or all of them. The first event is this very Friday so please do come along to support the first editathon event for the new Wikimedia residency at SLIC (the Scottish Library & Information Council).
October
* 6 - Hidden Gems Editathon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/wikipedia:GLAM/SLIC/Events/Hidden_Gems_Editat…> celebrating the six UNESCO world heritage sites in Scotland. Edinburgh Central Library. 1st event of the new SLIC residency
* 10 - Ada Lovelace Day 2017<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…> celebrating Women in STEM and the 19 British women chemists who petitioned the Chemical Society for admittance in 1904<http://research.library.mun.ca/506/1/pounding_on_the_doors.pdf>. King’s Buildings, University of Edinburgh.
* 24 - Women in Red meetup<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…> to correct systemic bias on Wikipedia. Argyle House, Edinburgh.
* 25 - Black History month editathon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…> - directly engage in history to increase the representation of women of colour on Wikipedia. Old Medical School, University of Edinburgh.
November
* 24 - Scottish Living Artists edit-a-thon. Scotland’s vibrant art scene is not currently adequately reflected on Wikipedia, the globe’s largest information source. Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/scottish-living-artists-wikipedia-editathon-…>
* 24 - Lost Literary Edinburgh<https://beinghumanfestival.org/event/litlong-edinburgh-making-paths-through…> - A Wikipedia edit-a-thon creating and improving pages for neglected or overlooked authors in Edinburgh’s long literary history. Part of the Being Human festival. 50 George Square, Edinburgh
Now that September has come to an end, we have also now accumulated a record breaking 2100 newly uploaded images<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monument…> of Scotland’s historic listed buildings and monuments from 2017’s Wiki Loves Monuments competition<http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/> including some fabulous pictures by Wikimedia UK trustee and OER Liaison at the University of Edinburgh, Lorna Campbell.<https://stats.wikilovesmonuments.cl/2017/unitedkingdom/detail?items=92&page…>
Once inserted into relevant Wikipedia pages<https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/Illustrating_Wikipedia_…> in the 295 different language Wikipedias, these openly-licensed images will be introduced to a global audience of millions to view, share and reuse. As evidenced in this year’s State of Creative Commons report<https://stateof.creativecommons.org/> (which we’re enormously pleased features an obscure 17th century map of Iceland shared by the university).
Many thanks to all who took part & helped document our cultural heritage this year.
Best wishes,
Ewan

Hi all
Just a reminder that the Wikimedia UK staff team will be hosting some
drinks (and possibly even nibbles) in our new office in Southwark this
Thursday, from 5 to 7pm. The address is Office 1, Ground Floor, Europoint, 5-11
Lavington Street, London SE1 0NZ. It's a five minute walk from Southwark
tube station or 10 - 15 minutes from both Waterloo and London Bridge (and
thankfully the tube strike has been called off!)
Please do email nicola.furness(a)wikimedia.org.uk ASAP if you're able to join
us - or indeed, if you're no longer able to, so we know how many tea bags*
to buy.
All best
Lucy

Dear all
The Wikimedia UK article on Wikipedia is rather out of date (although
thanks to whoever has added Josie as Chair and made a few other edits
recently). Whilst I appreciate that most people will have other priorities,
if anyone could spare the time to edit the page with more up to date
information that would be much appreciated, as obviously it would be a COI
for any of the staff or board to do it.
Relevant information can be found in our latest annual report here
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/File:Wikimedia_UK_Annual_Report_2017_(signatu…>
(which gives an overview of our programmes and reach, and shows that our
revenue for 2016/17 was £593,051, not over a million sadly!) and our
strategic framework for 2016 - 19 here
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Wikimedia_UK_Strategy_2016%E2%80%9319> which
includes the updated mission statement. We currently have 10 staff, not 8.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Open Rights Group present the UK's largest digital rights conference,
ORGCon 2017, taking place at Friends House Euston on Nov 4, 2017.
ORGCon 2017 will bring together academics, writers, lawyers, activists and
others to discuss the digital rights issues of the day including killer
robots, surveillance trends, fake news, age verification, privacy, online
abuse and extremism. Digital rights are human rights that affect us all.
We'll look at how the online rights of people of colour, women, and other
marginalised groups are being disproportionately affected by regressive
laws and online abuse. But we'll also be talking about how the Internet has
changed politics and campaigning for the good, and how we can harness this
to give ordinary citizens a voice, and help to hold the powerful to
account. Let the fightback begin.
Speakers include Graham Lineham television writer, actor and director,
Audrey Tang Hacker & Digital Minister for Taiwan, Jamie Bartlett Author and
Demos, Nighat Dad Digital Rights Foundation Pakistan, Helen Lewis deputy
editor of the New Statesman, Caroline Criado Perez Writer & Campaigner,
Sarah Jamie Lewis editor of Queer Privacy and Noel Sharkey PhD, DSc FIET,
FBCS CITP FRIN FRSA Professor of AI and Robotics and Co-director of the
Foundation for Responsible Robotics.
