Firefox (Win & Linux) & https://wikimedia.org.uk/ results in a
SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER error message and the associated warning that
"Your connection is not secure".
Okay in Chrome & IE.

Hello all,
Just a reminder that Wiki Loves Monuments is around the corner, andn
coincidently we are looking for input on volunteer equipment. (Specifically
photography and AV equipment)
Here is a list of current equipment we have:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Equipment_Loan_Procedure#Multimedia
We’d ideally strive for some kind of balance between quality and quantity,
but are not averse to a big ticket item if it will facilitate a specific
piece of work.
But ideas suggested to me by volunteers and other Wikimedians so far have
been:
More lapel microphones (to record panel events etc)
Shoulder rig
Video light box.
Filters.
Extra batteries and memory cards.
A bigger telephoto lens
A handy audio recorder
A camera drone
A selfie stick
We have a budget of £1000. If as part of the suggestions, people could also
look at prices and possible good value vendors, that would be helpful
too. Please
reply all here, or alternatively, with suggestions on the wiki.
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Talk:Equipment_Loan_Procedure> Looking to
firm up decisions over the next couple of weeks.
Thanks

Dear all
On Saturday, we have a meeting of the Evaluation Panel in the morning
followed by a discussion focused on education from 12noon to 3pm (with
lunch at around 1pm). We were going to hold a planning lab from 3pm,
however as we have had so few sign ups for that we are cancelling the
session. If you are interested in finding out about our proposed activities
for next year in the context of our Annual Plan Grant application to the
Wikimedia Foundation, please do sign up to the lunchtime meeting, where
there will be a more general presentation on our plans in addition to the
focus on education:

Booking for Ada Lovelace Day 2016 is now live - please feel free to pass on details to people you feel maybe interested in coming along.
[ADA_Blog]
Ada Lovelace<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace>, "The Enchantress of Numbers".
On Tuesday 11th October 2016, in Room 1.12 of the University of Edinburgh Main Library, we will again be running a Wikipedia edit-a-thon to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day 2016, an international celebration day<http://findingada.com/> of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
What's involved?
Beginning at 10am with a range of guest speakers in the morning, this will be followed by fun technology activities from 11am to 1pm:
· Metadata games<http://libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk/blog/2014/08/29/metadata-fun-and-games/>
· Fun with BBC Microbit<https://www.microbit.co.uk/> - a handheld, fully programmable computer that you can use for all sorts of cool creations, from robots to musical instruments - the possibilities are endless.
· Fun with Sonic Pi<http://sonic-pi.net/> - the live coding music synth for everyone.
· Create Lego calculators/adders<https://www.youtube.com/user/sine35video/videos>.
· Colour in a giant 'Garden of Ada'<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/ada-lovelace-day/oers/> design; hand drawn by our Interactive Content team.
Did you know that approximately only 16% of the biographies on Wikipedia relate to notable women? If you'd like to help redress this imbalance, new editors are very welcome and participants will be supported to develop Wikipedia articles; creating new role models for young and old alike.
Full Wikipedia editing training will be given at 1-2pm. Thereafter the afternoon's editathon from 2-5pm will focus on improving the quality of Wikipedia articles related to Women in STEM!
The event page can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/2cGapkn
<http://bit.ly/2cGapkn>
Who was Ada Lovelace?
Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), the only legitimate child of the poet George, Lord Byron<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Byron> and his wife Anne Isabella Milbanke<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Isabella_Byron,_Baroness_Byron>, was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Babbage>'s early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytical_Engine>. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. As a result, she is often regarded as the first computer programmer with her work a major influence on Alan Turing & inspiring countless others. There's now a graphic novel<http://sydneypadua.com/2dgoggles/> of her short but brilliant life and you can read more about her here<http://findingada.com/about/who-was-ada/>.
Want to come?
For booking purposes, the day is split in two parts: talks & technology activities in the morning and the Women in STEM Wikipedia editathon in the afternoon.
You can attend both morning and afternoon sessions or just one.

Not a student or staff member of the university? A limited number of tickets are available through Eventbrite (links are on the event page).
Suggestions for notable Women in STEM who could & should be represented on Wikipedia?
Feel free to suggest name of notable women we could include as part of this day of celebration. Email me at ewan.mcandrew(a)ed.ac.uk

Dear all
Wikimedia UK will soon be applying to the Wikimedia Foundation for an
Annual Plan Grant (APG) in 2017 - 18. Longstanding volunteers, members and
other stakeholders will be familiar with this process but for those of you
who aren’t, an APG enables affiliated organisations around the world -
including country ‘chapters’ of the global Wikimedia movement, like
Wikimedia UK - to access funds raised by the Foundation through the
Wikipedia banner campaign.
The deadline for proposals is 1st October and we will need to submit our
draft delivery plan for next year as well as the proposal itself. On Saturday
24th September we will be holding a day of meetings to discuss and develop
our proposal and our delivery plans for next year alongside the wider
Wikimedia UK community. These include a meeting of the Evaluation Panel in
the morning followed by a discussion focused on education from 12 - 3pm and
a Planning Lab from 3 to 5pm.
The education meeting will give participants the opportunity to feed into
our emerging plans for education and help us to shape an education
conference in early 2017. At the Planning Lab we will share our plans for
partnerships and programmes in 2017, with a view to incorporating feedback
and ideas into our proposal to the Wikimedia Foundation, and enabling
volunteers to identify how they might get involved with Wikimedia UK over
the next year.
All meetings will take place at Development House near Old Street, London
and are open to all, but signing up in advance is essential (see below for
links). Refreshments including lunch will be provided, and support for
travel is available if Wikimedia UK is notified in advance by email to
karla.marte(a)wikimedia.org.uk.
It would be great to involve as many people as possible in these
discussions so please sign up to one or both of the following sessions if
you can!

Hello all, I've been thinking about how WMUK can communicate better with
our community and let Wikimedians communicate with each other. I've heard
from some community members that they were a little disappointed that
people were no longer using the Water Cooler page for discussions.
I'd like to propose some different options and ask if you have any other
suggestions about how you'd like to communicate with us and others in the
community. So I've put a poll on Twitter
<https://twitter.com/wikimediauk/status/766703544275767297> with some
options for communications channels. I couldn't put more than four options,
so I chose Facebook, the Water Cooler, Slack and the Mailing List.
I'd really appreciate if you could take the time to vote which one you'd
prefer or reply here or to the Tweet with any other suggestions for how
you'd like to communicate with us.
What I'm really keen to communicate are the opportunities for our community
to engage with us, propose projects, receive funding and other assistance
from WMUK. To this end, it would be good to have an open channel or
discussion group of some kind where we can respond to your ideas and allow
you to ask us questions about our work. We'd like to be as open as the
knowledge we promote, so please let us know your views about how we can do
that better.
Have a great weekend!
