With some sadness I have to tell you that I will be leaving Wikimedia UK,
as an employee, if not as a volunteer, at the end of the year. I have
achieved what I set out to do and leave WMUK in a good state. I now need to
look for new challenges.
I was the first chief executive and it has been an amazing three years
watching the chapter grow and develop. It has not always been smooth
sailing but we have come through it together in good shape. Wikimania
proved how professional we had become and the positive feedback from the
participants makes all the work we put in worthwhile.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community, particularly the
volunteers who are at the heart of all we do, my great colleagues at the
Foundation and the loyal and hardworking staff at WMUK who have supported
me so ably and with such good humour over the years.
My best wishes go to my successor in all they seek to achieve.

Carwn ddiolch o waelod fy ngalon i bawb o fewn ein cymuned, yn enwedig y

Possibly of interest. Is anyone using UAVs, in the UK, to gather material
for Wikipedia, Commons, or another project?

Subject: New Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Guide to Good Practice
To: <ADS-ALL(a)jiscmail.ac.uk>
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are a ‘disruptive technology’, a technology
that forces us to rethink how we do (or used to do) things – from
protecting white rhino to delivering pizza. Everyone who needs a bird’s eye
view is now wondering how this technology can help them; farmers,
structural engineers, ecologists and, of course, archaeologists.
In theory, even a very minor archaeological site can now benefit from its
very own aerial survey. But while the possibilities for archaeology are
immensely exciting, many of the actual results are still disappointing;
blurry aerial photos, images which may be pretty but which can’t be
georeferenced and expensive cameras hitting the ground at terminal velocity.
Stephen Gray from the University of Bristol’s Department of Archaeology has
written a much-needed good practice guide to conducting an archaeological
survey using a UAV. The guide is the result of months of research and field
work; it sets out a standard and safe approach which can be carried out
using inexpensive equipment.
Part One of the guide, produced in collaboration with Jisc, suggests good
practice when collecting data.
http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/infokit/3d/uav-survey
Part Two is published by the Archaeology Data Service and is focused on the
sharing and preservation of low-altitude aerial survey data.

Dear Wikimedia UK mailing list,
We have been given some free off peak weekday tickets to the tank museum in
Dorset.
I have already Emailed those of our Wiki Loves Monuments participants who
opted in to further events, so apologies if this is a repeat, but if anyone
here fancies taking photographs of tanks, send me your snail mail address
and I will send you a ticket

Hello everyone,
Something that we've spoken about before is creating a list of suggested
jobs for people with varying amounts of time. It's about offering ways for
people to help our open knowledge mission in as little as a couple of
minutes, right the way through to having a couple of hours or days to
spare. With some help, I've added some early suggestions to the volunteer
jobs <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Volunteer_jobs> page, so you can see
what I mean. Any and all suggestions welcome please!
Thanks and regards,
Stevie
PS have a good weekend :)

Hello everyone,
I've been contacted by a group behind an event called Data Center Dynamics
- http://www.datacenterdynamics.com/conferences/2014/london-2014?l=programme
They have offered a free pass for a Wikimedian. I don't know if it is of
interest to anyone, and I;m not sure why they contacted me, but if you'd
like the pass do let me know off list and we can try and make it happen.
Thank you,
Stevie

All,
I can't currently access the moderation queue for the mailing list (it
times out when I try to action things) so if your email is stuck in the
queue - and I know two are - you have the moderator's apologies! Hopefully
the WMF will fix it shortly.

We are pleased to announce the UK winners of the Wiki Loves Monuments contest 2014.
The ten winning images can be seen here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2014_winners#United…
Particular congratulations must go to the photographer who entered under the alias ‘Fuzzypiggy', who managed to sweep the board with first, second and third prizes.
In addition to the top 10 images, two images were awarded special prizes for pictures of a building on one of the official UK ‘At Risk’ registers.
Particular thanks are due to Wikimedia UK, English Heritage and The Royal Photographic Society (our partners in running the contest), to our judges James Davies (EH), Roy Robertson (RPS) and David Iliff (Wikimedia Commons), to Magnus Manske for programming, and to the volunteers who helped organise the contest and pre-screen the images. Of course the greatest thanks must go to the photographers who uploaded images under a free licence to Wikimedia Commons where they are available for anyone to use without charge.
Congratulations to all,
Michael

Subject: Fwd: [Wikimediauk-l] Magna Carta
I have uploaded a few presentations and talks on video which would
cheer up Magna Carta articles, some are quite 'non-academic friendly'
for readers who might be daunted by a long encyclopaedia article
(videos play back without having to leave a Wikipedia article). They
are currently in
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Magna_Carta> but will
probably be moved to a sub-category in a while. The lectures might be
helpful for those thinking of improving articles and are looking for a
quick guide to issues and interpretations.
Of particular interest are a video from the British Library
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Four_surviving_Magna_Carta_to_be_br…>
and a friendly one from Parliament
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Magna_Carta_and_the_Emergence_of_Pa…>.
These are uploaded thanks to a YouTube download/upload script I put
together for a WikiprojectMed request. If there are others on YouTube
you find with a CC-BY licence, drop me a link by email and I'll get
around to taking a look. Unfortunately handling video remains a
challenge for contributors, so I think my uploads are the first videos
on Commons for this topic.

Hello all. I'd appreciate some help in gathering facts for the Science
Museum to use at the Late event on Wednesday 26 November. They run a pub
quiz and game show each month, and these facts will feed into that.
(Background: WMUK was invited to collaborate on one of these monthly
adult-only events, with the theme of the Information Age. We will be
running half a dozen sessions within the evening, but many more sessions
are run by the Science Museum staff themselves.)
Please consider contributing a fact or two at the page I've set up
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Science_Museum_Late/Fun_facts>. It should
accept IP edits.
Many thanks.
