Hi all
Andrew (cc’d) from the Australian chapter is looking for some advice on editathons, identifying/engaging partner organisations, getting participants, practical things, etc. with some potential ideas around library work and/or some themed events with a view to develop activities in Australia.
I know loads of people on this list have expertise in the area, if anyone had specific advice (or/and places to look for it) I’m sure it’d be appreciated!
Best
Simon
Hello everyone,
Just a quick note to remind you that there's an LGBT-themed editathon and
digitisation workshop taking place this weekend.
It's on Saturday 18 October at the Bishopsgate Library in London - a two
minute walk from Liverpool Street station. There's spaces available and the
event is free and open to all.
You can find more details here -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_LGBT_studies/Editathons…
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Hello everyone,
I wanted to give you all a brief update on a couple of advocacy-related
matters. I'm really happy to report that in the last couple of days
Wikimedia UK has signed theLyon Declaration on Access to Information and
Development <http://www.lyondeclaration.org/>I believe this is an important
statement for us to make, underscoring our belief that: "increasing access
to information and knowledge across society, assisted by the availability
of information and communications technologies (ICTs), supports sustainable
development and improves people’s lives."
The second policy item for update is the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EU_policy> position paper on copyright
reform
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EU_policy/Position_Paper_on_EU_Copyright>.
Wikimedia UK has now signed this paper, joining several other European
chapters and other open knowledge organisations. This work is important on
a European level as collectively the FKAGEU is making a strong case for
copyright reform favourable to the Wikimedia and open knowledge movement.
The main areas of interest the group is working on are harmonisation of
freedom of panorama across the EU to the most liberal model, the public
domain licensing of publicly funded works, and the right to use orphan
works. What is particularly pleasing is that there is a variety of
non-Wikimedia organisations now participating in this work. I hope that in
time the work of the growing FKAGEU will begin to link up with the work of
the Open Coalition to further amplify our voice and empower our sector.
If you'd like to know more, please do contact me directly or reply to the
list and I will respond.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Dear all,
Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is the National Development Body for the
museums and galleries sector in Scotland. They are seeking applications for
a Wikimedian in Residence from dedicated individuals with excellent
presentation and digital skills to work with Glasgow Museums for a 4 month
secondment followed by 8 months at the MGS office in Edinburgh. The post
will run for 12 months starting in early January 2015.
The project will support museums and galleries to improve their skills in
creating online content and open data projects from the digital curation of
their collections. This is a unique opportunity to help enrich Wikipedia
and its sister projects and share with the world the expert knowledge from
Scottish museums and galleries and to engage with curators, members of the
public and researchers to encourage contributions to the development of
Wikipedia articles.
MGS works with Scotland’s museums and galleries to create ambitious,
dynamic and sustainable enterprises: connecting people, places and
collections; inspiring, delighting and creating public value.
This post is jointly funded by Wikimedia UK and Museums Galleries Scotland.
Kind regards,
Daria

I'm very pleased to be able to confirm that the board has today resolved to co-opt Gill Hamilton as trustee to replace Padmini Ray Murray who stepped down last month. Gill is Digital Access Manager at the National Library of Scotland, in Edinburgh, where she is responsible for the development of open and linked data strategies and policies. She has recently lead the development and implementation of a policy to enable Library resources and metadata to be licensed openly. Gill maintains a broad range of contacts with national cultural heritage organisations, and brings to the board very valuable direct experience of the national GLAM sector. Please join me in welcoming her to the board.
This announcement has also been made on wiki: https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Water_cooler#Gill_Hamilton_co-opted_as_trustee

Dear all,
Wikimedia UK and the Royal Opera House would like to invite you to an
editathon on Saturday the 25th October.
We are catering for all levels of wiki experience to newbies, so this
should also be a good opportunity to bring a ballet loving friend or just
someone you know who might be interested in learning how to edit.

Be nice to see you there.

Hello everyone.
As a part of a project that we're developing to participate in the Science
Museum Lates event in November, I'm looking for a selection of quirky
Wikipedia articles - think Buffalo buffalo
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_buffa…>
(etc)
and Toilet paper orientation
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet_paper_orientation>, those that are
odd but still have some academic or scientific merit. Participants in the
session will be selecting some of their favourite lines from unusual
Wikipedia articles and putting them together to create found poetry. I'm
looking for some of the quirkier articles that might be fun for this, so if
you have any suggestions please do let me know!
Thank you,
Stevie

The next Cambridge meetup will be on 8 November, at our usual venue, CB2 on
Norfolk Street:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Cambridge/24
Please sign up or come, or even both.
Feedback from the walk before the previous meetup was positive: more
please, and possibly after the meetup proper rather than the traditional
6pm stroll to the Cambridge Blue. Well, I think the latter would be pushing
it in November, but watch the space for an event beforehand. Might be
plaques again (the previous effort resulted rather comically in the
discovery that one had not been put up, whatever the council website said).

Hi all,
London WikiWednesdays <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/London_Wiki_Wednesdays>
are being developed as way that Wikimedia UK can interact more with the
Wikimedia community and our volunteers.
This is a bit experiemntal, and so we have scheduled in teh wednesdays up
until 17th December to see how it goes.
Basically, it's about having a regular weekly opportunity to get together
with low outlay of resources, by using our base at Development House on
Wednesday evenings (6-8pm)
We have tried this out a bit with volunteers recruited to work on
Wikimania. We now want to engage a broader range of Wikimedians based in
London.
Most weeks it will be either in the office, or on occasions when we want to
attract broader members of the public we will use the rooms in the basement.
The aim is to be a bit more focused than the Monthly meet ups (with an
option for socialising after 8pm) and we want volunteers to see it as an
opportunity to get some of their own ideas taken forward.
So please add any ideas you may have to the weeks which currently just say
"General drop-in". e.g. if there is someone who has experience using snuggle
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Snuggle>, that would make a great
topic.
Whilst it is our aim to keep these sessions informal, it is useful to know
whetehr to expect you, so please confirm if you intend to come.
all the best
