Hello everyone,
You may notice that we've made some experimental small changes to the top
of the Wikimedia UK homepage. There's a good possibility that we will be
experiencing an increase in traffic over the weekend so the new text and
layout is prepared specifically with newcomers to the wiki in mind.
Please do let me know if you have any feedback but please do not edit the
page.
Thank you,
Stevie

Hey all,
I'm creating a list of people who are happy to talk about Open Access at
events. This will act both as an internal resource for us (the Open
Knowledge Foundation receive a lot of requests for speakers) and an
external/online resource for people who are looking to put on events and
don't know who to approach.
The Open Knowledge Foundation will be catalysing more events about Open
Access in the UK over the next few months, and hopefully we can do the same
around the world. Having a list of people we can approach to talk is a
great start to doing this!
A short blog post and link to the form can be found here:
http://access.okfn.org/2014/01/24/looking-for-open-access-speakers/
Please pass it on among your networks - and do sign up yourself. It commits
you to nothing right now :-)
Best wishes,
Michelle

Hello everyone,
The below may be useful for everyone interested in copyright - a chance to
have your say on the European Commission consultation.
Thanks and regards,

Hi everyone,
Just a quick reminder that we have 6 more days to collaboratively draft
answers to the European Commission's copyright consultation.
The idea is to give the global, online community a chance to come up with
answers that, if coherent enough, can then be officially given to the
Commission.
We see this as a social experiment, since no one until now has ever
attempted to answer collaboratively and publicly such short-termed and
in-depth consultations.
The corresponding link is:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/European_Commission_copyright_consultation
Have fun answering!
Dimi

This may be of interest to some people. Itd be nice to see open data being

Together, at this meet-up we will discuss the Education Open Data Challenge

drinks.
Book your place here

The Education Challenge
How can open data be used to help parents make informed choices about their
childrens education in one (or more) of three key areas:
* Expressing a preference for a school
* Choosing a subject or other learning priorities
* Engaging with their childrens learning.
Whether helping parents to better understand how their child is performing
compared to others; enabling them to raise challenging issues at parents
evening, or supporting them to understand which local schools or GCSE
subjects are most suited to their child, this challenge has the potential to
ensure parents bridge the home education gap and ultimately improve
their childs chances of success in life beyond school.

If youre interested in building innovative tools to solve this challenge -
submit your idea on our Collab Finder
<http://collabfinder.com/groups/education-open-data-challenge-series> page
to be considered and come to our meet up event. Ideas and teams will be
selected to attend our Creation Weekend on March 15/16th at which three
finalists will be chosen to receive £5,000 seed funding and support. The
final winning idea could receive up to £50,000 to launch their startup.
Apologies for the late notice: the National Library of Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library are hosting an Anybody BUT Burns edit-a-thon this Saturday from noon at the NLS (George IV Bridge, Edinburgh).
Burns' night is rapidly approaching and folk around the globe will be celebrating the Bard in style and good cheer, but we think that we should take a moment to think about the thousands of Scottish poets who won't be toasted this weekend! Local writers and literary enthusiasts alike are encouraged to join us and help boost the online profile of the poet who inspires them most. If you are a poet yourself, bring along some work and liven up the afternoon with a reading.
Tickets are available here: http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/anybody-but-burns-wikipedia-edit-a-thon-ticke… - places are limited though!
Lunch is provided, but please notify the organisers of any dietary requirements in advance. Please feel free to share this event with anyone in or near Edinburgh who might be interested!
See you there!

For some time, Chiltern Trains free Wi-Fi has been blocking Wikimedia

This site was categorized in: Photo Sharing,

Wikipedia, including its commons-hosted images, is not blocked. I have
reached out to them more than once on Twitter to ask for an unblock,
or who to speak to about requesting one, but they have never replied.
Apart from e-mailing them ,which I shall do shortly, what other action
might we take, as a community? Do any of you have contacts in the
organisation?

Hello everyone,
As you may know, Wikimedia UK has been working with other organisations
such as Creative Commons, Mozilla and Open Knowledge Foundation to build
closer working relationships and collaborations between organisations
working in the open space. We're currently calling this the "open
coalition".
The work has progressed to the point where we are looking to recruit
someone for a six month project to develop this more fully. There's a role
profile and full details on the Wikimedia UK wiki here -
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Open_Coalition_Project_Co-ordinator
The closing date for the position is Monday 3 February. Please do apply or,
if not applying, please tell your friends!
Thanks and regards,
