Dear all,
I just wanted to let you know that Michael Maggs has taken over from me as
Chair of Wikimedia UK. Michael has served as chair of the Governance
Committee since his election to the Board in June, is a long-serving
Wikimedia Commons bureaucrat, and I am sure he will do an excellent job.
Greyham Dawes continues as Treasurer and Alastair McCapra continues as
Secretary.
Regards,
Chris
Hello everyone,
Please see the below short statement from Wikimedia UK.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie
Wikimedia UK today announces that Michael Maggs has been elected as the new
Chair of the charity, succeeding Chris Keating. Chris remains a trustee and
will continue to serve on the board.
Chris stepped down at the charity’s board meeting in Edinburgh this
weekend, having served as Chair since August 2012. The board then
unanimously elected Michael as replacement Chair.
Chris Keating said: “It has been a privilege to serve as Chair of Wikimedia
UK for the last sixteen months and seeing the charity develop over that
time has been very satisfying. I look forward to continuing to act as a
trustee until my current term concludes at the charity’s next AGM in August
2014.”
Michael Maggs said: “On behalf of the board I would like to place on record
our thanks to Chris for his excellent leadership of the charity over the
last sixteen months. I am happy that he will remain a trustee and will
continue to provide the board with his expert advice. I look forward to
continuing his good work.”

The board of Wikimedia UK is delighted to report that Roger Bamkin has signed the final agreement which formally transfers ownership of the intellectual property in QRpedia to Wikimedia UK. Accordingly, as of yesterday all of the IP rights in QRPedia are held by Wikimedia UK.
The final stage in the process is to get the Domain Name Registrars to update their online domain name records to reflect the new ownership. This is purely an administrative procedure which can now be initiated immediately.
We regret the delay in achieving this outcome for the community but we are very happy that the technology has been secured for the global Wikimedia community to use. We would like to once again thank Roger and Terence Eden for their generous donation of QRpedia intellectual property rights and for their patience during the process.

Hi, would be any wikimedia experienced volunteers be interested in
subscribing to the Ghana mailing list and give advice should any questions
arise how to best proceed?
Ghana has about 15 editors who slowly expand the community via outreach
activities, but many of them are quite new and, at least imo, hints are
always welcomed.

This is likely to be a long term project but it has come a long way since
the summer in Hong Kong when I first saw the presentation. It has massive
potential.
I am sure Tilman will be interested in your thoughts.

PS It takes a while to download the presentation but it is worth it.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraiser Launch Today
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
The fundraising team is kicking off our year-end campaign in the US, UK,
Canada, Australia, and New Zealand at midnight UTC on December 3, 2013. SF
staff - banners are going up in a few minutes.
Check out our latest banner.
http://en.wikipedia.org/?banner=B13_1202_clr_blgs_enYY&reset=1
Quick reminder: We have been running banners at a low-level since the start
of the fiscal year in July. In that time, we have continuously tested new
banners to find improvements that will allow us to reduce the number of
banners people see each year. This is our first year experimenting with
year-round fundraising. We've already raised over $13 million USD -- which
is roughly equal to about how much we raised after our first full week of
the 2012 fundraising campaign. During this year-end campaign, banners will
be displayed to 100% of readers.
*A few key facts:*
- Amount raised in testing prior to the year-end campaign: Roughly $13.5
million USD
- Campaign goal: $20 million USD
- Banners will run to 100% of English readers in the US, UK, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand
- Previous donors will receive a reminder to donate email during the
month of December
- Mobile banners will be displayed in the US
- We will run campaigns in other countries and languages in 2014
If you spot any errors, please let us know on the meta talk
page<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Fundraising_2013>.
Feel free to ask questions there as well.

Hi all,
As Jonathan suggested some time ago, in the publicity we can offer a gift
voucher of a given value, and allow the recipient to chose what is easiest
for them. This has also been repeated once or twice. I am surprised that
we can't reach consensus around this.
That way WMUK is not taking a public stance as regards any business, and
our private views on this or that company can be discussed elsewhere.
Likewise, there would be no need to publicise how any recipient may choose
to receive their prize.
I would hope people would see this as a suitable solution.
all the best

The issue which was raised was the reputation of the charity, not the cost
of the vouchers.
Bear in mind that WMF received £2M from Google in 2010 which falls within
the period covered by the Public Accounts Committee report on Google
published this summer:
http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/…
The companys highly contrived tax arrangement has no purpose other than
to enable the company to avoid UK corporation tax.
Googles reputation has been damaged by these revelations of aggressive
tax avoidance. That damage will not be repaired until the company arranges
to pay its fair share of tax in the country where it earns the profits
from the business it conducts."
So, the Wikimedia movement in general, through this donation to the WMF
can be seen as benefiting from Tax Avoidance.
Whilst I do not think WMUK's reputation is necessarily damaged by this
historic situation, I do feel that it would be helpful if staff, trustees
and members all had a certain sensitivity to this issue, as this still
remains a matter for public concern.
all the best
Fabian
