Greetings all,
Been some things floating around about this already, but I'm proud to announce Brighton Wikimedia Hackathon.
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Brighton_Hackathon_2011
MediaWiki developers are going to meet in Brighton on the South East coast of the United Kingdom to hack anything to do with Wikimedia projects (mediawiki, toolserver, pywikipedia and various other things.) I've been putting this together for a while, with a lot of help from Roan, Reedy, Sumana and various others, and the date has now been confirmed for the 19th and 20th of November 2011 (unfortunatly, it clashes with WikiConference India). If you're intending to come, please add your name here, just so we can start getting an idea of how many people are coming:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Brighton_Hackathon_2011#Attendees
I'll be adding more details as they become available, as well as a registration form.
-- Lewis Cawte
I've created [[Wikimedia in Scotland]] on the WM UK wiki, and would
really appreciate if someone could create a specific Common.css page for
it.
Required is [[MediaWiki:Common.css/Wikimedia in Scotland]] with the
following content:
#p-logo a
{ background-image:
url('http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2d/Wikimedia_in_Scotl…') !important;
}
Once a hard refresh is done, this should then cause the Wikimedia in
Scotland graphic I've created to be displayed as the Wiki logo for that
page only.
Ideally, we then 'tart up' this page a little and have the new
scotwiki.org domain point to it. With help from Peter Weiss, I've a
QRcode which includes a Saltire and points to scotwiki.org.
If we're to make use of this, then I believe one of the key functions of
the page should be to encourage people to create accounts to upload
images, and to perhaps join WMUK.
Scotland is, largely, in need of a drive to recruit contributors who
venture outside when the daystar is visible; or, tap into the wide
international visitor base, get them improving the quantity and quality
of images, then expand coverage across multiple languages.
I'll be discussing this further with Fae on Friday and Saturday, but my
gut instinct is to start with images. The number of people I see -
apparently on holiday - and lugging round £4K+ of camera equipment in
Edinburgh is almost-frightening. Bringing such people into the WMF fold
just seems sensible. rather than a photo they share with friends and
family for 20-30 views per month, they can end up with thousands of
views and encourage others to build and translate content around quality
images.

Hi all,
All members of Wikimedia UK should have just received the notice below of our Extraordinary General Meeting to change our objects in October. If you haven't received it and think you should have, please let us know. If you're not a member, then you should join (visit http://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/join - it's just £5) so you can take part. ;-)
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. there was a glitch in the email sending this out, so you might have received a version with the resolution duplicated several times - apologies if so! There's only one resolution to vote on at the EGM.

Dear all,
As you know, Wikimedia UK is applying to become a registered charity. This process is well under way, and involves delicate discussions with the board, several volunteers, the Charities Commission and WMUK's legal team.
Part of this process involves some changes to Wikimedia UK's 'objects' to bring them in line with the Charity Commission's view of what a charity is. Our current objects are outlined at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Objects. In simple terms, they are a form of 'mission statement', explaining what WMUK does, and how we do it.
Because the objects are a key part of our constitution, they can only be changed at a General Meeting of members. As such, we will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting on Sunday 16th October 2011 at Pendrel's Oak Pub, Holborn, London. At this meeting we will be putting forward a special resolution to change the organisation's Objects, details of which are below.
The official EGM will run from 2pm, and we hope to conclude by 2.45pm. It will include a summary of the status of our application to become a charity; voting on the Resolution; and the introduction of our new Chief Exec.
The address of the venue is:
Pendrel's Oak
283-288 High Holborn
Holborn
Greater London
WC1V 7HP
If you will be attending, please let us know by adding your name to the list of attendees on our wiki, so that we can make sure we have enough room for everyone.
Resolution #1
The EGM will vote on the following special resolution:
--
THAT the Memorandum and Articles of Association of Wiki UK Ltd be altered as follows:
in accordance with s.28 of the Companies Act 2006, clauses 1 to 6 inclusively of Wiki UK Ltd's Memorandum of Association shall be treated as provisions of the Wiki UK Ltd's Articles of Association and the said provisions shall be renumbered M1 to M6 respectively to avoid confusion with other provisions of the Articles of Association;
by deleting Article M3 (previously Clause 3 of the Memorandum) and replacing it with the following new Article M3 (subject to such minor amendments to this Article as the Charity Commission may require for the purposes of registering Wiki UK Ltd as a charity):
M3. The Objects of the Charity are, for the benefit of the public, to promote and support the widest possible public access to, use of and contribution to Open Content of an encyclopaedic or educational nature or of similar utility to the general public, in particular the Open Content supported and provided by Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., based in San Francisco, California, USA.
“Content” means textual or numerical information, still or moving images, sound or music or other data disseminated on printed, electronic and other appropriate media and services. Content is subject to editorial policies and safeguards designed to ensure its overall accuracy and quality.
Content is "Open" when it is available for no charge and without discrimination to the general public, with legal rights to view, copy, share, adapt, improve and otherwise use and reuse that content and when technical measures are in place to support such usage.
by replacing the word “Object” with the word “Objects” in all instances that the word “Object” occurs throughout the Articles of Association.
by adding the following new Article 29 to the Articles of Association:
29. These Articles are to be interpreted without reference to the model articles under the Companies Act, which do not apply to Wiki UK Ltd.
--
If you wish to vote by proxy, then please forward this email to "tellers(a)wikimedia.org.uk" with the following text at the top of the email:
"I, [Name] of [Email or postal address], being a member of Wiki UK Ltd, hereby appoint James Farrar and Richard Symonds (the Tellers) of tellers(a)wikimedia.org.uk as my proxy to vote in my name on my behalf at the extraordinary general meeting of the company to be held on 16th October 2011 and at any adjournment thereof.
Resolution 1: [Insert "For" or "Against"].
Unless otherwise instructed, the proxy may vote as s/he thinks fit or abstain from voting.
Signed on [Date]."
You may also vote in person at the EGM and you may change your vote at any time. Email proxies must be received by 2pm on Saturday 15th October 2011. By forwarding this email with your instructions to the tellers you are agreeing to appoint the tellers as your proxy and they will cast your vote on your behalf. Alternatively you have a right to appoint someone else as your proxy to attend the meeting and vote on your behalf. Please use the same wording as above and email it to tellers(a)wikimedia.org.uk.
We look forward to seeing you on 16th!

Announcing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/BM/Ice_Age_Event_-_October_13,_…
This is a full-day event to encourage participation in our project
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/BM/Ice_Age_art> to improve
coverage of Ice Age art aka the Art of the Upper Paleolithic on
Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, including the early history
of the rediscovery and interpretation of these objects. The British
Museum are planning an important exhibition for Spring 2013 on this, and
the project will run until then.
This is a rare opportunity to have guided tours of the collections at
Franks House, where the British Museum's Palaeolithic and Mesolithic
objects not on display live. It will also be possible to photograph
some objects at Franks House, which will be very useful for the project
(and at Bloomsbury in the normal way). Places are strictly limited to
20 because of the facilities at Franks House. We are very lucky to be
having a generous amount of time with Jill Cook, Deputy Keeper of the
Prehistoric & Europe Department, responsible for Palaeolithic and
Mesolithic material, and
[http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/departments/staff/prehistory_and_eu…
Nick Ashton], Curator of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic collections.
Sign up now open - only 20 places.

I have proposed an amendment to the resolution the board have proposed
for the EGM. The resolution is to require the board to give the
membership two weeks to object should they wish to change the wording
of the objects from that given in the resolution (as the resolution
allows them to do). This is because I don't think the board should
ever have the power to make unilateral changes to the chapter's
constitution, however minor they may be.
You can see the exact working of the amendment here:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:EGM_2011#Proposed_amendment
If you wish to see this amendment discussed and voted on at the EGM
(and you are a member), please add your name to the list of proposers
on that page. I'm not sure how many we need, so the more the better.
We would like to use a couple of clips from the Jimmy Wales Bristol speech in January in our next submission to the CC, but that the whole thing is a) too long at 1hr 20 mins& b) talks about some things we don't want to go into, such as gender imbalance, Wikia etc.
There is a 6 min version, on Commons I think, but this doesn't have some of what we want.
Is there anyone ableto extract clips (I'll give the timings) 2-3 of c 3 mins each& get them up on probably You Tube, so I can link to them in the letter?
This is needed by Sunday. Please contact me if you can help,
Thanks,
John
Hi,
As we have to book a venue far in advance are there views on what
Autumn 2012 dates (August through to November) would be best for our
second GLAMWIKI conference (hopefully the main global conference for
2012)?
We have an very kind offer, from one of our top partners, the British
Library to host for free during the Autumn period, though this would
have to span Friday through to Monday (presumably we would go for a
Friday and Saturday again). We have yet to get feedback from other
Chapters if another country were very keen to play host but I think
the UK is in a good position with our pretty active GLAM programme and
we are pushing for more inter-chapter initiatives. Once we have some
nominal dates I can then try to stake our claim for another GLAMWIKI
with the wider community.
Thanks,
Fae
