*Hi,**Amrita College for Journalism & Communication, Coimbatore have
expressed interest in a Wiki Academy and proposed 28 Jan 2012 FN for the
same. I need to inform them about the number of facilitators for making
stay arrangements at their campus.* The travel expense from nearby
cities(Like Bangalore and Chennai etc) will be borne by the College.
I am planning to participate in the same and would like another 2 to 4
people to join me.
Kindly let me know by tomorrow.
Cheers

You are invited to the Pune Wikimedia hackathon.
Date: 10-12 February 2012
Venue: Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies & Research (SICSR) at
Symbiosis International University, Pune
Extremely rough event page, soon to get more details:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Pune_Hackathon_Feb_2012
A Wikimedia hackathon is a chance to learn how to develop using
MediaWiki, Phonegap, and our other technologies, and to work alongside
experts. Software engineers, designers, and translators are welcome.
We're tentatively planning to focus on internationalisation and
localisation, mobile and offline Wikipedia access, and the gadgets
framework. I aim to get more details in the next two weeks.
If you're interested, please leave your name and your email address, or
a link to your user page, on that event page. (A "real" registration
system is coming soon.) Thanks!
And please feel free to publicize this elsewhere. I've heard that, when
marketing, you have to get the message to the recipient three times in
three different ways before you have a good chance they've noticed it.
So if you need something to help get the word out -- a sample
tweet/dent, a leaflet, etc. -- let me know.
Thanks!

Hi,
Please excuse me for writing this question here.
I am not sure what is right mailing list for this question. so posting here
with a hope some one will redirect me to the right mailing list.
Will we be able to search photos by a geographic co-ordinates from our
wikiCommons photos? If yes, how?

Virtual Keyboard Standard for Indic Languages
IEEE 1908.1™ Working Group is seeking participants to develop IEEE
P1908.1™. Sponsored by IEEE Communications
Society<http://ieeestandards.org/c.html?rtr=on&s=8nv,1lqq0,38mt,bl94,7f2e,9fvj,ij9d>,
the standard is for Indic virtual keyboards.
[image: An example of Virtual keyboard for Hindi on smart phones adapting
INSCRIPT (Courtesy: Multiling keyboard)]Individuals working independently,
and/or supported by their employers from industry/ government/ academia/
non-governmental organizations, with interest in Indic (Indian) languages
and their computing needs, are invited to participate in this new working
group. The objective of the working group is to deliberate the virtual
keyboard technologies and issues for modern phones/tablet computing device,
with touch screen interface, and compose and shape the standard.
This standard will contain a conceptual model applicable to all Indian
languages with appropriate customization for each language.
*Need for the Standard:* A large majority of Indians are not comfortable
using computing devices with an English keyboard interface. INSCRIPT layout
was standardized by the Indian government in 1986 for QWERTY physical
keyboards, with the aim of interoperability and touch typing for all Indian
languages. Due to limitations in accommodating the preferences of
languages other than Hindi, the high learning curve because of lack of
phonetic mapping between English and Indian language characters, and the
lack of availability of physical keyboards with Indian language characters,
alternate layouts, and transliteration based input methods as per the
preferences of vendors and users proliferated.
Phones/Tablets with touch user interface can display characters on keyboard
dynamically for each language. This can help people easily use their phones
for data needs in their native language. INSCRIPT cannot be adopted easily
for the following reasons: it uses the top row (the row above QWERTY) of
the conventional keyboard and punctuation keys for Hindi alphabet. With the
smaller screen size and resolution on mobile phones, the virtual keyboards
are limited to only four rows, covering the basic English alphabet needs.
Therefore INSCRIPT is not usable readily even for Hindi. The proposed
standard will help in taking the benefits of computing and communication
technologies to everyone.

Hi All,
We are happy to announce that WikiProject Offline Wikipedia for Indian Schools has kicked off with a great start. For OWIS-FULL we want to compile a set of 7000-9000 articles that will fit in a single DVD.
Planned sequence of action is as follows:
Set up the framework for the WikiProject. Done
Select articles for OWIS-FULL, subject-wise. - In progress - Open now for 7 subjects.
Create table & inspect each article carefully for tags, issues and work needed, subject-wise.
Sort out all the article problems, subject-wise.
Submit to a jury for proposed changes eg maps, deletion of inappropriate material etc.
Hand over to tech team which takes articles and compiles them into an offline Wikipedia.
While OWIS-FULL is being prepared, each subject set once completed will be released separately to the environment.
For selecting articles for OWIS we're using articles included in SOS Children's Village Offline Wikipedia as the base articles. From this base we're deleting the articles that we think are not so relevant to Indian students and add articles that are more relevant to them. The aim of this step is to take the existing SOS list and convert it into a balanced set of articles list that will give adequate and balanced exposure to both the aspects - Indian and international, for Indian School students. For this we are also using the syllabus of CBSE 9th to 12th to help us identifdy the school relevant topics that may be missing.
Over 33 volunteers have started narrowing down the list of articles that will be added to OWIS-FULL. We are currently working on following 7 subjects: Arts, Business Studies, IT, Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry. Please refer to the table below to view progress of OWIS in absolute number terms:
Just to understand the table better:
No. of volunteers = Number of Wikipedians volunteered for a particular subject.
No. of articles we want for OWIS = Total number of articles we want to include in Offline Wikipedia for Indian schools per subject
No. of SOS list articles = Total number of articles that were included in SOS Children's Village Offline Wikipedia per subject
No. of articles to be deleted from SOS list for OWIS = Number of articles that have been selected to be deleted from SOS list since they might not be highly relevant to Indian students.
No. of articles to be added to SOS list for OWIS = Number of articles that have been selected to be added to OWIS list since they might be highly relevant to Indian students.
Total no. of articles for OWIS = Total number of articles we have as for now to be included in OWIS.
Special thanks to Swaroop who has made a lot of contributions to Maths & Physics stream, Netha Hussain for Biology, Arnav Chaudhary, User:DebashisM, & User: BPositive for IT. All of them have done great work and contributed in their special way towards this project. We need more volunteers to start working on Chemistry which is currently lagging behind. I'd request more of you to step ahead and volunteer for this project either for Chemistry or any other stream that you like as there is so much more to be done. You can get more information about OWIS and volunteer for it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Offline_Wikipedia_for_In…
Now we're hoping to complete the 2nd stage in the New Year: Select articles for OWIS-FULL, for these 7 subjects by end January 2012. May we request every-one to pitch in on this most worthwhile task?
Thanks

Dear All,
Assamese wikipedia has crossed the 1000 article milestone yesterday (2012
January 7). Congrats to all Assamese wikipedians who contributed to
this. Started
in 2002 June 2 <http://as.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1>, Assamese wikipedia
is the first Indic Language wikipedia. Assamese wikipedia will celebrate
its 10th Anniversery this year June.
I remember last year this time Assamese
wikipedia<http://shijualex.wordpress.com/2011/02/27/indian-language-wikipedias-2010-s…>was
having just 300 articles and just one highly active user. The
excellent
efforts put forward by some of the senior community members using various
social networking sites are helping Assamese wikipedia to grow its
community. Now it crossed 1000 article milestone and has more than 10 high
active users. Hope community will be able to add more members to its crew
this year.
