Summary: CRC check
Product: openZIM
Version: unspecified
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P3
Component: zimlib

Downloaded ZIM files are unfortunately not always fully valid at the end of the
download stage. Consequently users may have a bad user experience without
having a chance to easily check if the file is valid.
It would be great to provide in the zimwriter/zimlib a way to check the zim
file integrity easily.
A way to achieve that could be:
* At the end of the ZIM file creation process (file is created) compute and
append at the end of the file a CRC (md5sum, sha1)
* In the zimlib add a method checkIntegrity() or something similar able to
compute the CRC from the file (excepting the CRC hash at the end) and make the
comparison.
Hash algorithm should be fast and reliable (md5?).

Dear all,
as the year is almost over, I have started to write the yearly report of
what the openZIM did in 2010 and how we spent our money that has been
generously donated by Wikimedia CH.
* https://openzim.org/Yearly_Report_2010
This document is still a draft, please add whatever you think should be
included.
Meanwhile I prepared the budget for 2011. Due to our decision to combine
our developers meeting with Wikimania in Haifa and pay travel costs in
order to allow all contributors to participate we need a much higher
budget than this year.
I have based my budget on the assumption that we will have to reimburse
10 participants with flights of 500 EUR each and 100 EUR per night in
the hotel.
* http://openzim.org/Budget_2011
As we didn't have a 3rd Developers Meeting in 2010 we actually spent
less money as in 2009, there are more than 6000 EUR left. The budget for
2011 also provides a lot of room, as I don't want to deny any
contributors to participate at Wikimania due to lack of money or because
flights might get more expensive etc...
You can help saving our budget by registering for Wikimania right
tomorrow and make use of the early bird discount for registration and
hotel accommodation!
Comments are welcome! Please have a great start into 2011!
Thanks,
Manuel

Hi all,
first of all I'd like to wish all of you a great start into the next
year. Still it is 2010, but...
...as we have discussed at the developers meeting in Strasbourg: We are
going to meet in 2011 in Haifa, and as openZIM wants to invite all of
you to go there we are looking forward to quick registrations. Remember:
The earlier you register, the lower the price is. It will be paid by
openZIM, but our budget is limited!
So this message is important for you:

Hello offline community!
Work on an offline project is pushing forward, so I thought I'd give a
brief update on this list-serve, with the hopes of revitalizing
communication here :)
Hopefully most on this listserve are familiar with Martin Walker and his
team's work on Wikipedia 1.0
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team>.
The project is on the verge of launching Wikipedia 0.8, with the hopes
of the 1.0 release early next year.
Today, a few of us had a brief chat on IRC concerning what needs to be
done to accelerate the development of Wikipedia 1.0. I wanted to
capture those notes (see below) here to accelerate conversations. Not
all these notes will be applicable to everyone; just want to utilize
this space for public sharing!
Also, if anyone has comments or wants to be involved with the article
selection process, please don't hesitate to (and in fact, please DO)
reach out!
==Meeting Highlights==
===Wikipedia 1.0 is anticipated for release at end of Q1 2011==
*Product:
**50-60K English articles
**Search capabilities, thumbnail pictures & data boxes, index
** 4-8GB
* Predecessor WP 0.8 set for release in couple weeks
**Incorporates WikiTrust in article selection
*Biggest bottleneck to completing is the desired /Indexing /functions
===Indexing function===
* Currently have three indexing capabilities: alphabetical,
geographical, Topical (see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:0.7/0.7index)
* Input format for index is plain text files
* Two informational specialists are working on the ideal indexing (e.g.,
http://pastebin.com/WER6Ghqz)
* Proposed index is sent out to WikiProjects for revision/manual editing
(estimated 1-2 months)
==Next Steps=
1. Evaluate the index and input file process (tomaszf & carl-m to
follow-up)
2. Evaluate state of communication/learning sharings across projects
(jwild to follow-up with Martin about this)
Thanks to all for the awesome work and particularly the whole Wikipedia
1.0 team for their hard pushes here!
