Summary: CRC check
Product: openZIM
Version: unspecified

OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P3
Component: zimlib

Downloaded ZIM files are unfortunately not always fully valid at the end of the
download stage. Consequently users may have a bad user experience without
having a chance to easily check if the file is valid.
It would be great to provide in the zimwriter/zimlib a way to check the zim
file integrity easily.
A way to achieve that could be:
* At the end of the ZIM file creation process (file is created) compute and
append at the end of the file a CRC (md5sum, sha1)
* In the zimlib add a method checkIntegrity() or something similar able to
compute the CRC from the file (excepting the CRC hash at the end) and make the
comparison.
Hash algorithm should be fast and reliable (md5?).

Betreff: [Wikimedia Kenya] OPENZIM VERSION OF WIKIMEDIA FOR SCHOOLS

Hello partners. I have to appreciate the efforts of each and everyone of
you in preparation towards the launch and the pilot project itself. As
we plan for the launch and the cost of the project, let us also put the
core item in mind: The presentation itself. We will be using the openzim
version of offline wikipedia for schools, so we have to be absolutely
conversant with its functionalities.
It could be more convenient if we had the latest version (late 2010) but
from the searches I have done, the latest we have is version 0.7 which
was released early this year. This version records some of the events
which have already taken place such as the 2010 world cup in future
tense. If anyone knows more about a later version release please inform us.
I have version 7 installed with Kiwix v.0.9 in my windows 7 and it is
confirmed that it works with no hickups.
I was just surfacing the idea that those of you that are going for the
pilot may first want to meet together so that we can familiarize
ourselves completely on the use of schools wikipediaa. This will make
presentations interesting and more efficient since we can only deliver
to others what we know very well. Let us get your views on this.
Kind regards,

Hi,
I have discovered an new bug on Kiwix for Windows:
Kiwix is not able to open filenames containing accents, something
containing "wikipédia" for example.
This is a Windows specific issue, if I do the same on GNU/Linux, it
works.
I think the explanation is that ext4 uses UTF8 as charset and NTFS,
UTF16... and a code point in UTF16 needs 2 bytes although in UTF8, it
needs only one.
As the method to open a ZIM file takes a char* as argument (so base on
1 byte) it works with UTF8.
This is a pretty new problematic for me and I simply try to understand
what need to be fixed.
So feel free to give here a feedback.
For example, this is not clear if we need absolutely an (additional)
method accepting wide chars to open such files in the zimlib?
This is also not clear for me if this is possible to build a generic
and portable solution here?
Regards
Emmanuel

By means of official introduction to this list, my name is Jessie Wild
and I am working with Global Development team here at the Wikimedia
Foundation. Currently, I am helping to solidify an "Offline Strategy":
conducting an assessment of (1) who would stand to benefit the most from
offline versions of Wikipedia, (2) how to best get it distributed to
those people, and (3) what that product could and should look like.
To that end, I wanted to direct your attention to the StrategyWiki which
currently documents the research I am doing on the target market and the
distribution options.
