In general I have no objection to users protecting their own user page.
I do not substantially change other user pages, and expect mine to be
respected in the same way.
Still, there are times when such changes can be acceptable. If my edits
in some article have caused a broken link in a user page, it is only
proper to go there and fix the damage that I have caused. If I can't
fix iit because the bage is protected, well ...too bad.
