Accepted <> endorsed or welcomed. I accept seeing piles of rotting
rubbish on the street - I don't go out of my way to change it. But I
don't welcome or endorse it.

I don't know if that's true. It's helpful at some stage, but finding
common ground is perhaps a better first step. Most semi-political
arguments about US foreign policy seemed to start with people
definining their allegiances ("I'm a republican") etc, and things
rapidly degenerated.
