I do not really know, though it would seem logical that you can remove
them.  But if you're sure you don't need the content anymore, and your
main concern is disk space, I suppose a safe way to deal with this is
to replace the content with an empty string.
Still, if the images/archive folder is only a few GB in size, I
wouldn't bother.  Disk space isn't that expensive.
