Still using it for research over this break! I hope to be one of your
earliest and biggest evangelists for PAWS!
Biggest hiccups were mostly with students discovering edge cases in my
brittle code, so it definitely was not PAWS’s fault. There were some
glitches here and there, nothing worth trying to replicate at this
stage since it involved students using old computers with dozens of
tabs and programs open and were fixed with a reboot.
I’d say the biggest suck was the 1GB of memory limit we hit with some
network algorithms on some datasets. A totally understandable limit
and we only hit it on one of the labs (#3), but one that I had to
develop some workarounds nonetheless and students still stumbled on
when they ran GWB or Obama’s revision histories through some workflows
as a part of exploration.
I already told JMo this, but I just want to re-inforce it with you: “I
think the work Yuvi and the rest of you have done to develop and
maintain the PAWS infrastructure is amazing for both pedagogical and
research purposes, but documentation on how to access and use this
infrastructure is incredibly hard to find and follow. I suspect PAWS
has >60% of the functionality researchers would want (would be >90% if
content were in the database as well, and >99% if
revs+content+pageviews). I really really really want pageviews table
in PAWS!”
I still find myself doing a lot of work via API that could potentially
be done better via tables I know nothing about on the replication
servers (interlanguage links, category membership, etc.).
I’ve got another question I’d want to pose to the wikiresearch
community, but I’ll post that under a new thread.

Are you still using it? Which parts sucked? Which parts were ok? Just
checking in to see how it went / is going :)
