This specific concept is public knowlege. It has been heavily advertised
both online and offline [1] as a good compromise and legal solution by
Lawrence Lessig (a Law Professor at Stanford Law School).

[2] For instance, en.wikipedia offers this exact licensing option for
images in a pulldown menu. This option has also been heavily advertised
