sure more resoloution is always nice because it lets you do full page 
prints at A4 with dencent quality and to crop out individual items from 
the picture and get a reasonable resoloution result.

However for the primary use of commons which is as a repositry of media 
for illustrating articles in wikimedia projects 800x600 is more than 
enough even if those articles are being converted for print.
