If other people feel this way then commons has an illness.

Large images are better because they can be used in more contexts, but
smaller images are not useless. An 800x600 image makes a perfectly
fine postcard, and   can be quite informative.

When you also include the fact that these images have good geographic
diversity (within the UK) they really do represent something useful
and unique.
