Hi folks,
In late 2010 we asked Jimmy to come by the Wikimedia Foundation offices to tape a series of short messages aimed at Wikipedia/Wikimedia contributors and to Wikipedia fans/users in general. The shoot went quite well, and we're pleased to present these short clips for you to use at your public events, or in any other useful way to help celebrate Wikipedia 10.
The clips were produced in a way that they would present best on a screen at an event, welcoming the audience and providing well-wishes for the festivities. We made two versions...
The first below is a general 'call to action' video for a broad audience of Wikipedia supporters. This clip may be used in any setting, but is particularly suited for a broad audience of Wikipedia supporters (users, donors, contributors, enthusiasts). We expect this clip to be used by media outlets, bloggers, and for public events where Wikipedia or Wikimedia volunteers may not be present.
The second clip is a bit longer, and more of a personal message from Jimmy to the Wikipedia editing community. This is a more suitable clip for events where the majority of attendees are Wikimedia volunteers and know the movement well.
Global call to action (public) http://vimeo.com/18034259 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMBbGvG8lpU
Wikipedia editors address http://vimeo.com/18057095 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=113J-hP4CQI
Both are HD, broadcast quality (720p) and shot with microphone sound.
Why vimeo? Because you can easily download the high-resolution version of the files (these should be in QT format) and re-purpose as necessary. You should also be able to re-purpose these files for subtitling, including with open source tools.
We've also uploaded the videos to youtube, where subtitles can be built on top of the videos in many languages. We will upload OGV formats on Commons shortly, but those variants may not be ideal resolution for presentation in a big space.
I also know there are good open-source subtitling solutions out there, which I welcome others to chime in and speak to. Let me know if there's anything staff at WMF could look into to support the translation/subtitling. If someone is willing to volunteer to translate transcriptions, I'm sure can get them loaded into youtube or place them on Commons.
We will post the 'call to action' video on the WMF blog and in a few other spots closer to the event, and it may get distributed to media as well leading up to the anniversary. The 'Wikipedia editors' address should be preserved and still be something special for viewing at the events you host on or around January 15.
Looking forward to your thoughts,
jay walsh
Great, that was one of what I'd have liked to see but forgot to bring up. Kudos for filming team.
Can we get a transcription particularly of the video for editors? Non-English speaking audience like me will be grateful to have a subtitled version (or if it's techically hard, translation can be put on another screen), and transcription preferably by native speakers is a great help both for keeping accuracy and saving time.
Cheers,

I wish there was a simple, open way to do this for all our videos, unfortunately it varies depending on the level of quality you need and the hosting.
We'll put good english subtitles on the YT videos asap so everyone can at least have a reference for the english, then we'll try to get the .srt files posted on commons or Wikipedia 10.
Thanks for your patience...

There is a simple and open way―just use http://universalsubtitles.org/
It's already the preferred solution at Commons and works with both Vimeo and YouTube

I posted this at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump but haven't gotten any replies there, so thought I'd try here.
Contacting local wikipedians
What are good and appropriate ways to contact local wikipedians? I guess the watchlist notice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Watchlist-details#10th_anniversa...) may be the best (that's how I learned about this). But I wonder what other options there are. A geographical watchlist seems possible: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Geonotice.js though caching may make that slow to take effect.
Is there a way to automatically process user ids in relevant categories (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedians_in_Colorado) to find prolific active contributors so we can invite them on their user page? Are there bots suitable for this?
Also, are there any good templates on en.wikipedia to use for advertising local events, or advice for making them?

Hi Neal,
The best way to contact lots of local editors that I know of (other than combing through categories like "Wikipedians in Colorado", which isn't all-inclusive) is to use a watchlist geonotice.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Geonotice/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Geonotice.js

We can use the watchlist geonotice. They have worked well for the DC and NYC groups. I really don't think we cache watchlists since users need them up-to-date
Also, we can do user talk page invites to people in that category. Just draft an invite message and someone with a bot can deliver.

The watchlist geonotice works using a javascript file, though, rather than being embedded directly in the watchlist page - e.g. the one on en.wp is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Geonotice.js That javascript file is cached for up to 31 days - so it's important to get notices up sooner rather than later. There can be a delay of a day or so before many people in the geographical areas even start seeing it.
Thanks, Mike
In terms of bots, may I suggest MessageDeliveryBot for the english Wikipedia, or for deliveries on more than one project Global message delivery (hosted on Meta)?

In the Chilean case, we have sent messages using a bot to the talk pages of the users in [[:es:Categoría:Wikipedistas de Chile]], but not all the people have their userpage there. Something like the GeoNotice would be great but it seems is not enabled in other projects yet, just in en.wp.

There will be supply of vinyl Wikipedia puzzle globe stickers (some might be paper, but they should be vinyl) and a separate supply of 'Wikipedia 10 years of...' paper stickers, which let you fill in the blanks.

The files are on commons now:

(I welcome tips on the finer points of Commons. One tip from me: seems like I should have added a newline at the end of the "other information" field of the wizard or something. As it was, I ended up with "==Licensing==" on the end of the last line, where it didn't work.)
For what its worth, this was the t-shirt selection we got (50 in all):
Globe & Wikipedia in many languages: Blue 2 S 3 M 10 L 4 XL 2 XXL
WP 10: Olive Green + yellow writing 11 S 3 M
WP 10: Olive Green + green writing 6 L 6 XL 3 XXL

when handing out these t-shirts, be careful. A quick look suggested that the labels do not /always/ represent the actual size. (might be an exception). I found at least one case where the S was larger than the M :)

Also - please all be aware that the shirts are not all unisex. Some of the shirts are 'women's' sizes. They are cut differently to fit women. You'll notice those by the shorter sleeves.
The women's size shirts run smaller than the unisex shirts.
Examples of the sizing differences:
Women's tee sizes: http://www.tultex.net/storage/specs-sheets/0213TC_Style_Sheet.pdf
Unisex tee sizes: http://www.tultex.net/storage/specs-sheets/0202TC_Style_Sheet.pdf
Hope that helps - if the shirts don't say 'womens' or 'ladies' on the tags, then check them against the regular unisex shirts and you will definitely see the difference.
Sorry for the confusion - I should have mentioned this earlier.
