Hi Steven,
2011/1/12 Steven Walling swalling@wikimedia.org
We put the banner up for three reasons:
- Most people still don't know we're having our 10th anniversary. Even in
countries without events, there is a very basic outreach message here that needs to be communicated.
Definitely true!
- There are events all over Europe, and it's not inconceivable that people
reading Dutch Wikipedia might want to go somewhere/be somewhere other than Amsterdam. Even if that's not true, I think there's enormous value in showing people from all languages the breadth of what we're doing for the anniversary. Local promotion is one goal for the banners, but it's not the only one.
Yeah, my suggestion wasn't so much to differentiate on language, but rather on region. There might be a small percentage of them able to go to Ghent instead, but I think that the number of disappointed people will be much larger.
- There are online only events, including livestreams from a couple and a
running Skype session Jimmy is coordinating.
If you want to change the banner text in Dutch, including to a more generalized 10th anniversary message that does not mention events at all, please do so. If there's any way we can get a different or better translation up, let me know how I can help.
Here, I was mainly referring to the landing page - which only mentions real life events. I think it would be great if people also have the opportunity to participate in some way online ("congratulate us by making an edit" ?).

So... now we have this banner in the Netherlands asking people to participate in the celebrations. But the only event in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) is fully booked with 200 people already.
What do you think? Should we pull down the banner, change the text (what would be good options?) Is there a way in general for people to participate online? (is there an overview of available video streams?) Is there a page where people can leave their congratulations?
Best,
