Rather than hasty generalizations, I suggest gathering some more data first. An infobox for event meta info and results would be helpful.
Our Boulder event went very well, I thought. We had over 40 people show up.
I found it really easy to organize, and I'll confess that I was motivated by getting a t-shirt (to fit into my extensive collection :)
We got coverage on our local community radio station (KGNU), who even released the 10-minute story as CC-By-SA!
Rick Block gave a detailed talk on bots.
