Dear friends:
This last week we had exciting events in Argentina regarding outreach
with the educational system and the celebrations of Wikipedia 10.
# On May 17th we signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education of
Buenos Aires province. They want us to help them to develop some
skills with teachers and librarians regarding the new digital
enviroment. This is probably the largest educational system of Latin
America [[citation needed]] and we are very happy to have a voice
there. More info (in spanish) in our site:
http://www.wikimedia.org.ar/node/30
# Yesterday we celebrated the first 10 years of the spanish Wikipedia
with a large conference: http://www.wikimedia.org.ar/node/28
## We launched a wikicontest about Iberoamerican women: the idea was
to write about remarcable women of Argentina, but the community of
Wikipedia asked us to extend the challenge to Iberoamerican women. As
you know, the gender gap is not only about editors but also about
content; this wikicontest pretends to help to fill this gap.
## Educ.ar, the official site of the Argentinian Ministry of
Education, launched their site "Wikipedia in the classroom":
http://wikipediaenelaula.edu.ar, with resources for teachers.
## Mariano Blejman, from Página/12 (the third national newspaper) and
Ariel Torres from La Nación (the second national newspaper -sorry, but
the first one doesn't like us :P) made a great presentation about
Wikipedia and journalism.
## To end the journey, we had a conference about Wikipedia and
education, with several academics as you can see in
http://www.wikimedia.org.ar/node/28.
And then, we went for a wine and a barbecue!
As you can imagine, we are exhausted but happy. We will update you as
soon as we upload the photos and videos.
Patricio

Hi everyone,
at the Chapters Conference in Berlin we briefly introduced our idea for a
very special global initiative called "Wikipedia for World Heritage!".
Feedback was great and now we would love to discuss ideas with you. The
initiative is designed as an international project. Your opinions and
participation are most welcome!
But first, what is this all about? We are convinced that Wikipedia is
predestined to become the first ever digital UNESCO World Heritage Site. The
free encyclopedia should be recognized as what it really is: a pioneering
project of the digital age. It has carried the ancient idea of common and
free knowledge over into the third millenium.
So, is this a birthday present? It is, since Wikipedia is celebrating its
tenth anniversary this year. At the same time, it is much more than that.
The tenth anniversary is a perfect opportunity to look back at what tens of
thousands of volunteers have achieved in so little time. Wikipedia is
unprecendented in the history of mankind's endeavours to preserve and
disseminate knowledge. To quote from the first of UNESCO's ten criteria for
World Heritage sites: It represents a masterpiece of human creative genius.
Our major goals focus on public debate and on increasing awareness of what
Wikipedia means to the global society. Millions of people around the world
take Wikipedia for granted, as a convenient source of information. We know
that it is incredibly more than that. Wikipedia is by far the most
successful ambassador of the free knowledge concept. It provides free access
to knowledge. It enables cooperation beyond national and cultural barriers.
It is there for anybody to benefit from. And finally, Wikipedia is waiting
to be improved. Anyone can help and participate. "Wikipedia for World
Heritage!" could be a unique possibility to bring all this into the public
spotlight, because it honestly isn't there yet. There are many means to
achieve this. One of our first that we are currently preparing is to
convince as many people as possible to sign a petition of support. We have
established a project page on our Wikimedia Germany website. There is a
language version in both
English<https://www.wikimedia.de/wiki/WorldHeritage>and in
German <http://www.wikimedia.de/wiki/Weltkulturerbe>. Furthermore, we will
open the petition (in German and English) next week.
Additionally, we hope to establish an international landing page, where
chapters can share information. We don't have decided on an URL yet.
Suggestions anyone? Please feel free to brainstorm and discuss some catchy
(and available) ideas!
There is so much information to share with you. Take this as a first "hello"
and feel invited to comment, criticize and help pushing this initiative
further! We are in touch with experts on the UNESCO's World Heritage
program, and they tell us that we can do it. If the Wikimedia chapters
jointly create public awareness of the amazing achievements of free
knowledge, chances are good.
We already had the first (positive) press
coverage<http://www.wikimedia.de/wiki/Presse>in Germany and today we
had an interview with New York Times (article will
be published -maybe- in about 1-2 weeks).
Last but not least I would like to take the opportunity to introduce
Sebastian Sooth our new project manager (for this and other community
projects). Sebastian <sebastian.sooth(a)wikimedia.de>, me and my
PR-assistantMichael<michael.jahn(a)wikimedia.de>will be responsible for
this project, please don't hesitate to contact us
directly or on this list.
See you,
Catrin.
Hey folks,
As part of Wikimania 2011 in Haifa, we want to make a short video clip for
the opening ceremony. At first we thought to make summary of the 10th
anniversary events around the world and asked you for videos - but we
understand many of you don't have such one.
So we trying again - now we are planning to make some kind of video to
wrap-up the 10th anniversary events and to summarize the movement activities
and events over the last months (since Wikimania 2010).
We don't have much time, and we also have to produce a huge conference :)
I be happy if each chapter\group can send us:
1. Their best pictures from the 10th anniversary events (and videos - if you
have!)
2. Few photo\videos from interesting events\activities that you had over the
past months with one-two sentence to explain.
3. And everything else that will fit :)
We would much more prefer videos - as we can make the video much more
interesting, but photos will be fine too, just try to focus us one to your
best one, and not to select from 300 photos galleries :)
If people also want to help us with this project, we will be happy!.
Please send your photos\videos and everything else to *
wikimania(a)wikimedia.org.il*.
We will appropriate your help and waiting to see you in Haifa! Don't forget
to register! http://wikimania2011.wikimedia.org/wiki/Registration
*Thanks!*

Speaking of which, I couldn't attend an event and I'm not sure if there was
anything available at the event... is there anyway I could obtain such
merchandise?

Keep in mind there's more tenwiki events that haven't occurred yet.
e.g. anniversaries for other languages.

Hi everyone,
So quite some time has passed since Wikipedia’s 10th anniversary, and now
that things are starting to wind down, it’s time to consider what we want to
do with ten.wikipedia.org (AKA tenwiki, if you use interwiki links). We’re
in no rush to act, and I know there are a few celebrations yet to happen,
but I thought it was good to start thinking about this now that we’re well
past the rush of January 15th.
>From the start, one of the reasons I was comfortable starting “yet another
wiki” was that I figured that after the anniversary was over there would be
no need to leave it up indefinitely, requiring upkeep from the community and
staff.
There are lots ideas that have been mentioned casually. For example: at the
last community IRC meeting there was a suggestion for it to be merged with
Meta.[1] In general I’m agnostic on the matter, though I do a have a couple
general goals...
With that frame of mind, I’ve opened a discussion at the tenwiki Village
Pump with some of the various options I’ve heard or thought of.[2] Please
add your ideas there, especially if you’ve been a part of the crew of
editors who’ve worked to maintain the site over the past several months.
If you haven’t heard me say it before: thank you for helping the site grow
so quickly in those past months while staying free of vandalism/spam. The
whole idea would have been a disaster if it wasn't for your hard work.[3]
(On a related note: Jay Walsh and I have been working on some reports to
wrap up the Foundation's major work on the 10th anniversary, one of which is
the start of a page about running any global, distributed event in the
Wikimedia movement. Jay is currently consumed by another deadline, but we're
hoping to publish that work soon.)
Thanks!
