Dear all,
I wanted to know the status of the connectivity at the venue of the
event held in San Francisco. I looked here[1] but I have found no
information about it.
A member of ours is in San Francisco (he is doing an internship at
Creative Commons) and we would like to connect with him during our
events in Italy.
Thanks in advance.

All:
Pasted below is a simple draft media advisory we plan to share on
ten.wikipedia, as well as disseminate using a wire service. This
isn't a press release, but a simple media "note" to make sure that
press understand that the 10 year birthday is approaching and
encourage them to start writing stories if they haven't yet.
We hope to have a draft release for you to use by Monday end of day.
Also, as mentioned before, we plan to use the hashtag #wp10 for our
social media posts.

Wikipedia to Celebrate 10th Birthday January 15, 2011
January 15, 2011 will mark a decade of Wikipedia. Founded by Jimmy
Wales in 2001, Wikipedia has become the fifth most popular website in
the world with 410 million monthly readers (comScore, November 2010).
Just three years after its founding, Wikipedia reached 500,000
articles in 50 languages. Now, at 17 million articles in 270 languages
and growing, Wikipedia is the only top-ten website in the world that
is truly user-generated, supported and maintained. Over the last ten
years, hundreds of thousands of people have contributed more than one
billion edits to this vital resource.
To commemorate this historical milestone, people all over the world
are gathering at events -- at least five on every continent -- to
celebrate Wikipedia. 17 volunteer-planned events will be taking place
in India alone. We invite you to join volunteers in A Coruña, Spain,
Bangalore, India, Skopje, Macedonia, London, England, Nairobi, Kenya
or any of the 150 (and counting) events all over the world :

Hi folks,
Earlier today I created a page on ten.wikipedia.org to encourage everyone participating in Wikipedia 10 events to take great pictures and video.
http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organize/Record_our_history
I can't over-emphasize how important it is for everyone hosting an event -any event- to make sure you collect great images and video, and of course share those images. Wikipedia 10 is a particularly good time to hone your skills and get in the habit of documenting every single meeting and occasion - and documenting them very well.
It's easy to overlook this step with all other planning, but please, please don't. If you're part of a new or established Wikimedia chapter or organization, I absolutely promise you that having very good images on hand will be critical at some point in the future. Whether it's for presentations, media, reports or other documents, or just to archive and document your roots: take pictures!
Remember that we're documenting images for future generations, and creating a lasting historical record of the people behind this movement. You are all pioneers! And these images will shape the historic record for future generations.
It's also something that we at the Foundation very much benefit from. Whether it's putting your pictures up on the walls, showing them to donors or stakeholders, or just putting a name to a face: these images have incredible value for us. I also know that the chapters and other global pieces of our movement rely on these images to build their own global understanding of our collective work.
No event is too small!
No event is too big!
Ensure someone at your event will focus their efforts on taking the best possible efforts. Please make sure you don't forget to take, post, share, and detail your images. Plan ahead!
Thank you!

Hi Itzik,
Here's the transcribed text of Jimmy's anniversary address. You can
pass it along to the people who translate it to other languages.
It would be nice if someone prepared a standard subtitles file out of it.

Hi, all.
In addition to the advisory here:
We wanted to provide you with a draft of the press release we will
send to press on January 13 630PM UTC. We will send an updated
version which will include quotes form Sue and Jimmy then. Like the
advisory, you are free to use however you like. You can add local
information, take out information or use it as it is.
How to use it: I think the best thing to do is start translating it
now. Then, when we send you the final with Jimmy and Sue's quotes on
January 13, it will allow you to translate those quickly and send to
press then.
To localize it further, you can include how many events are happening
in your region and include details about them. If you participated in
the fundraiser this year, you can insert information about how much
you raised locally.
If you have questions about how to localize, let me know and we can
work on it together.

San Francisco, January 15, 2011 -- On this day ten years ago, a
website with a funny name invited people everywhere to come together
to create a free encyclopedia. The initial results were underwhelming.
The article "Astronomer" simply said: "Scientist whose area of
Research is Astronomy." Sweden: "Country in Northern Europe.
Inhabitants are called Swedes. Language spoken is Swedish. Capital is
Stockholm." Physics: "Physics is a very broad subject."
Following these humble beginnings, Wikipedia grew quickly, and 1,000
articles were written in less than a month. Over the next five years,
many new language versions were launched, and Wikipedia began to
surpass traditional reference sources in breadth and depth. The secret
to its success: anyone can edit any article. In January 2006,
Wikipedia volunteer Gareth Owen wrote on his user page: "The problem
with Wikipedia is that it only works in practice. In theory, it's a
total disaster."
Wikipedia is now consulted by more than 400 million people every
month. It provides instant access to high quality and in-depth
information, free of charge and free of advertising. In the last
decade, a vast and unique global volunteer community has come together
to create more than 17 million articles in 270 languages, advancing
the cause of free knowledge for every person on the planet.
Today, January 15, the Wikipedia community is coming together in
almost 300 locations all over the planet to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the free encyclopedia. From a conference in New York to
a concert in Prague, from the launch of a new school project in
Nairobi to a museum bootcamp in Amsterdam, from a beer-meet in
Bucharest to a film screening in Tel Aviv, the events are organized by
volunteers and Wikimedia chapters, as well as independent supporters.
The events are open to participation by anyone and reflect the
diversity of the community.
Wikipedia is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a charitable
non-profit organization established by Wales in 2003. It is entirely
supported by donations, and just completed the most successful
fundraiser in its history, with more than 500,000 individual donations
totaling more than $16 million.

Hi folks,
In late 2010 we asked Jimmy to come by the Wikimedia Foundation offices to tape a series of short messages aimed at Wikipedia/Wikimedia contributors and to Wikipedia fans/users in general. The shoot went quite well, and we're pleased to present these short clips for you to use at your public events, or in any other useful way to help celebrate Wikipedia 10.
The clips were produced in a way that they would present best on a screen at an event, welcoming the audience and providing well-wishes for the festivities. We made two versions...
The first below is a general 'call to action' video for a broad audience of Wikipedia supporters. This clip may be used in any setting, but is particularly suited for a broad audience of Wikipedia supporters (users, donors, contributors, enthusiasts). We expect this clip to be used by media outlets, bloggers, and for public events where Wikipedia or Wikimedia volunteers may not be present.
The second clip is a bit longer, and more of a personal message from Jimmy to the Wikipedia editing community. This is a more suitable clip for events where the majority of attendees are Wikimedia volunteers and know the movement well.
Global call to action (public)
http://vimeo.com/18034259http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMBbGvG8lpU
Wikipedia editors address
http://vimeo.com/18057095http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=113J-hP4CQI
Both are HD, broadcast quality (720p) and shot with microphone sound.
Why vimeo? Because you can easily download the high-resolution version of the files (these should be in QT format) and re-purpose as necessary. You should also be able to re-purpose these files for subtitling, including with open source tools.
We've also uploaded the videos to youtube, where subtitles can be built on top of the videos in many languages. We will upload OGV formats on Commons shortly, but those variants may not be ideal resolution for presentation in a big space.
I also know there are good open-source subtitling solutions out there, which I welcome others to chime in and speak to. Let me know if there's anything staff at WMF could look into to support the translation/subtitling. If someone is willing to volunteer to translate transcriptions, I'm sure can get them loaded into youtube or place them on Commons.
We will post the 'call to action' video on the WMF blog and in a few other spots closer to the event, and it may get distributed to media as well leading up to the anniversary. The 'Wikipedia editors' address should be preserved and still be something special for viewing at the events you host on or around January 15.
Looking forward to your thoughts,
jay walsh

Hi everyone,
So we're about a week away from the anniversary, and there more than 275 events listed on ten.wikipedia.org. Whether you're an informal meet-up of a dozen people or a conference for hundreds led by a chapter, we're going to use this week to run CentralNotice banners on Wikimedia sites to remind readers of the anniversary and promote your activities. (I'm going to repeat the following details on the tenwiki Village Pump if you prefer to read it there.)
We're currently running a banner on English Wikipedia that links directly to tenwiki and is awaiting further translation. (We will also be translating the Main Page of tenwiki further. Let me know if you want to help with both those translation projects.) The priority here is threefold:
1. Educate people about the 10th anniversary in general.
2. Link to a comprehensive list of online and offline events so that people can choose the event that interests them.
3. Show people the enormously diverse number of things our movement is doing to celebrate.
Considering that we're only running the 10th anniversary messages for a week, we did not plan for a large number of different banner designs. However, if you're an organizing group that would like to run your own banner design or directly link to your event in your country, that is definitely welcome contingent on a few basic requirements:
1. Just to state the obvious, the banner needs to be localized fully and will only run for visitors in your country who are on the wiki the banner is localized for.
2. The banner will need to mention both the 10th anniversary (remember, most people have no idea it's happening) and that there are events to join. A banner that merely mentions a single party or other kind of event without context would fail to do justice to the anniversary and the other volunteers who have worked hard to make it memorable.
3. The banner can link to your event's ten.wikipedia.org page or a landing page elsewhere. To link directly to a page off tenwiki, that page needs to clearly mention and link back to the other events on tenwiki (so that people don't end up at a dead end if they don't find what they're looking for). If there are multiple events happening in your country, then whatever page the banner links needs to mention all of them.
4. You need to submit this banner directly to me so that we don't miss any submissions. If you want to put it on-wiki first and simply link to it in your email, that's great.
If you're still with me here, thanks for reading, and thanks for everything you're doing to make the 10th anniversary great. If you have questions, please let me know.

Dear all
as I mentioned previously
some of us expressed our wishes to video chats with other parties around the
world
(even Jimbo express such wish :P)
so I think it is to have a list or sort of thing to cross check each other
times
so I started one the ten yo wiki http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Chat
I have a little request for everyone to convert your party time to UTC
also, for an easier match.
and I have divided the list into two sections, as I believe 15th will be the
peak hour of events.
do feel free to suggest anything
and if you wanna chat with our HK beaux, do mail me off list :P
