Hi,
I wanted to make a follow-up comment after Bahar pointed out that in
fact Turkey is not in the Middle East. While he is absolutely right in
pointing out that Turkey is a part of Europe, unfortunately, due to the
way Wikimedia is forced to track unique users for the purpose of
consistent analysis it makes sense for us to place turkey with Middle
Eastern and North African languages. Wikipedia is reliant on ComScore,
an Internet tracking company with a global survey (see link:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Stu/comScore_data_on_Wikimedia) to
provide us with information about the number of unique users of
Wikipedia sites because unfortunately, we do not have the ability to
track that data ourselves. ComScore places Turkey as part of their
Middle East and Africa region. Since they do not break the information
down by country for us we are forced to stick to their regional
classification in order to produce consistent analysis. Sorry that this
is causing Turkey to be incorrectly geographically classified, but
please don't let it keep you from participating in the strategic
planning process. Additionally, I will add a note to the Turkish
language to explain the reason for its misclassification.
Best,
Sarah

Hi everyone, as you all may know Wikimedia is in the midst of its
strategic planning process (see
http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
<http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> for more information).
As part of this process, I have been developing a fact base on Middle
East and North African languages and their Wikipedias. The purpose of
this fact base is to help the Wikimedia community understand the
importance of these languages as they develop strategies to expand the
reach of Wikimedia worldwide as well as to discuss the specific barriers
to growth of these language projects. If any of you are editors of any
of the Middle East and North African language Wikipedias (including
Turkish) , I would really appreciate it if you took some time to look at
what I've put together and make any changes or additions that you
thought were appropriate. It would be especially great if anyone had
some thoughts or ideas to add to the section on barriers to growth of
Middle East and North African language Wikipedias. I want to make sure
that we have the most accurate information possible to inform the
strategic plan as it is developed. This is the link

Sorry I don't speak Turkish and had to write this e-mail in English.
Thanks!!!!
