Subject: [Foundation-l] Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year 2007 opening soon
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2007 Picture of the
Year competition will be held soon. Any user who is registered at any
Wikimedia wiki and has more than 200 edits is invited to vote.
The competition is among the 514 images that became Featured Pictures
at Wikimedia Commons between 2007-01-01 and 2007-12-31. There are
literally hundreds of beautiful high quality pictures... please help
us choose the best one!
Voting will be conducted through a tool on the toolserver (to make it
easier to count compared to editing on a wiki). Users can request a
voting token on
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2007/Voting>
. You will need to have email enabled for the user account you intend
to vote from. You can only vote once, even if you have multiple
accounts that meet the edit requirement. The voter log will be public
although the actual votes themselves will be private.
Voting starts on January 10th. There are two rounds of voting. In the
first round, you can vote for as many images as you like, regardless
of category. In the final (28), you can only vote for one image.
Thanks,
Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

I'm a bit time-strained now so ccing this mail to wikiquote-l.
Language specification as follow-up would be appreciated.
If you would like to bring something up to the global Wikiquote
community, [[m:Talk:Wikiquote]] may work too.
Cheers,

Perhaps it was just the reason Drini once claimed LP means any
Wikiquote project must equip its own EDP if it keep collecting fair
use quotes. And as an admin of English Wikiquote which accept quotes
from copyrighted works greedily for now, I am very concerned about
that consequence.

Yes, definitely. Since mention to the quotes on English Wikipedia
version are sketchy and the shapes of content are different (largely
quotes-only-content vs. quotes as reference and only small part of
content), instruction from Mike will be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to consider something more Wikiquote-specific if we could.
Commons has a button:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Commons-button-en.png
that has the text: "It's all about freedom / Support Wikimedia Commons".
Perhaps we could do something similar? Here's are two possibilities based
on quotes from a 19th-century collection:
"Quotation is the highest compliment / Support Wikiquote"
* Samuel Johnson; quoted in Edwards, Tryon, "The World's Laconics: Or, The
Best Thoughts of the Best Authors" (1853), p. 232: "Quotation is the
highest compliment you can pay to an author."
"A community of mind / Support Wikiquote"
* Unidentified (possibly Johnson); quoted in Edwards, "World's Laconics",
p. 232: "Quotation, sir, is a good thing; there is a community of mind in
it..."
Any other ideas?
Regards,
Jeff

Hi,
Trying to put a Wikiquote banner for the coming fundraising, I found
we had no Wikiquote banner.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2007/web_buttons
Could anyone create "I love Wikiquote" banner(s) and the blank ones as
well as other sisters? Only Wikiquote and Wikispecies lack their own
banners currently ... and it somehow helps to increase our beloved
Wikiquote visibility not only its mother organization ...

Subject: [Wikimania-l] Wikimania 2008 will happen in Alexandria, Egypt
To: "Wikimania general list (open subscription)" <
wikimania-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
The Jury for Wikimania 2008 bids have met and are pleased to announce
that Wikimania 2008 will be held in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Bids were assessed by a Jury[0] which included community members
representing various geographical areas, and organisers of the previous
conferences. The Jury used 12 criteria[1] to judge the bids, which were
drawn up based on the Jury's previous experiences organising the
conference and with input from a wide range of community concerns.
Alexandria was found to be particularly strong in the areas of
reflecting the Wikimedia Foundation's roots in geo-diversity and
multi-lingualism, of the very exciting nature of the proposed venue
and its local facilities, and of the particularly advanced nature of
the financial planning.
All three Bids were very strong in differing ways, each with stronger
and weaker points. We would like to draw particular attention to the
efforts of the team behind the Atlanta bid, which came in second place
and was particularly commendable in the areas of providing in-facility
accommodation and social space, and for doing great outreach to local
Wikimedians. Their efforts could serve as an example to any team
hoping to get the local community involved. The Cape Town bid was
marked strongly by the Jury for cultural diversity, a particularly
benign local environment, and efforts to secure local recognition and
facilities. We'd especially like to congratulate Cape Town on
providing our very first strong bid from the Southern Hemisphere.
A table of the results is given below. Each member of the jury had up
to 60 points to allocate to the bids in each of the 12 categories,
which they did after a period of discussion and careful deliberation.
Category Alexandria Atlanta Cape Town
Accommodation 251 298 71
Funding 264 224 152
Location 294 154 182
Internet Access 204 263 133
Local Laws 155 253 222
Press 232 235 153
Organizing Team 244 206 163
Rotation 305 55 260
Social Areas 222 258 140
Cost 289 206 125
Venue 323 158 139
Visas 243 109 263
Total 3026 2419 2003
Note that a 13th category, on personal preference, was polled but is
not included as it had no significant effect on the result.
The Jury would like to thank all of those involved in bids, including
those whose bids did not go forward to the final selection, for their
efforts which combined to produce a competitive field.
We strongly encourage all those who bid this year, and those of you
wondering whether your city could have done the same, to consider
bidding for Wikimania 2009, for which the decision will begin very
shortly. See the Wikimania 2009 page on meta[2] for further updates
within the next few days.
We are especially looking forward to the Wikimedia Foundation
collaborating with one of the most famous repositories of knowledge in
the world, and emphasising the newly developing Wikimedia projects in
Africa and the Middle East. We would like to encourage the entire
community to support the Alexandria team over the coming year in
producing an outstanding conference, and look forward to meeting as
many of you as possible there.
On behalf of the Wikimania 2008 bid Jury.

Sue Gardner and Jan-Bart DeVreede abstained from voting.

via #wikiquote I was noticed a discussion and related bug filled as
bugzilla:11415.
http://fr.wikiquote.org/wiki/Discussion_Mod%C3%A8le:Citation
Sorry for speaking english, but I don't know French. Just a
suggestion. Wouldn't it be nice to have a small (very small) edit
button on each quote so that you can edit every quotation
indivitually? Kaamelott is a long article, it has a few [edit]
buttons, but I'd say not nearly enough. Especially because of the use
of a template as this one makes it very hard for newcomers to find the
quote they wanted to edit. And we shouldn't bit the newcomers with
long list of templates. The problem is, I've never found a way to
include a heading in a template with the desired outcome :( Any
thoughts? Feel free to continue the discussion in French. I'll come
back and hopefully see the results in the template. --81.15.51.66 21

An independent internal news bulletin

//////////////////////////////////////////
=== Request for help ===
Dear readers,
Almost two years ago I started with Wikizine. The very first message
send out about it was also a "special edition". That was to present
Wikizine, what it was all about.
http://en.wikizine.org/2005/10/year-2005-week41-special-edition.html
This one now is not to explain what Wikizine is.
Wikizine is not totally unsuccessful. The number of readers has only
go up since its existence, slowly yes, but up nevertheless. The rare
feedback has been positive.
It was my intention to create a platform with Wikizine to bring
together the most relevant information, news, from all Wikimedia
projects and languages. I felt, and still do, that there is a need for
that.
I hoped that after some time a network of reporters of the various
wikis, languages, projects, would form who could bring there news to
the larger community by means of Wikizine. And also that the would
people step up to join me in creating Wikizine.
This largely did not happened. In the last two years some people have
volunteered and helped with making Wikizine. But that where far to
few, who did not a lot and only for a to short time to have any real
impact.
Wikizine was and is still a one man show. I have made all editions
until now of Wikizine. I can not continue like this. It has become
more difficult with every edition for me to bring myself to get the
next one ready. The time it was fun is long gone. The frequency of the
editions has become more and more erratic. And the quality is falling.
I need people who are willing to work substantially on Wikizine. And
not only today but on the long term. Finding news, writing it in the
draft; constructing Wikizine. If you like to help please contact me;
walter AT wikizine.org
Request for help for Wikizine has been send out before, only not so
explicit like now. This is also the first time I send it to
non-Wikizine channels.
The responds the previous times was always nearly zero. I do not
expect anything else this time. Surprise me.
Greetings,
Walter Vermeir
