To summarise, we received 37,000+ images images in this edition from 1784 participants. 1500+ participants contributed to the movement for the first time during the contest. From the 37,000+ images we received, 1300 images are already been used in Wikipedia and it sister projects. Inspite of the contest ending, the flow of knowledge doesn’t end here, there are plenty of unused ASI monument images which is now available to utilize them across the movement. The WLM India core team which comprised of Abhinav Srivastava,Kiran RaviKumar,Karthik Nadar,Naveen Francis,Sanket Oswal,Santosh Shringare and Yohann Thomas show their gratitude to the jury members, the volunteers & the participants who made this successful. Also, the organizers want to thank Wikimedia Foundation for funding, Wikimedia India Chapter for joining hands and WLM International team for the support received throughout the competition. With a new interface & updated layout, the website of Wikimedia India is now better than ever. Wikimedia India would want to thank Naveen Francis & Ranjith Siji for all their help in this exercise. Wikipedia Asian Month 2016 <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Asian_Month> With the 2016's iteration of the online edit-a-thon,taking place in November 2016, the purpose of Asian Month on the English Wikipedia is to improve the quantity and quality of articles relating to Asian countries. Last year, over 7,000 articles were contributed in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month. This year too, more than 500 users have enrolled themselves to contribute to this online edit-a-thon. As a symbol of friendship between Wikipedia's Asian communities, each participant who creates at least four (4) articles that fulfill the criteria will receive a specially designed Wikipedia postcard from other participating countries. Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". Raju Suthar is one of the most active Wikipedians on the Hindi Wikipedia with almost 750+ articles to his name. Featured Wikimedia of the Month for November Dr.Vishwanatha Badikana <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Vishwanatha_Badikana> is a Kannada Professor at the Prestigious St. Aloysius College <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Aloysius_College_(Mangalore)> in Mangalore.He started editing Kannada Wikipedia in Septmeber,2014 & Tulu in January,2015 as part of Wikipedia Education Programme run in his Institute. He was part of a small team of editors who worked & finally brought Tulu Wikipedia out of incubator recently. Dr Vishwanatha mainly write articles on folklore & has written close to 100+ articles in Tulu Wikipedia. He currently working on a unique project where he is writing articles on all the Alphabets of Tulu. Since Tulu is spoken over a small region of across Karnataka & Kerala,he believes that these articles will be useful for students to learn & speak Tulu which will lead to growth of the language. Other Wikimedia news in IndiaOpen Con 2016 Ranchi The OpenCon 2016 Ranchi was hosted at Dept. of Zoology, Ranchi University was jointly organized by the Open Access India and the Dept. of Zoology, Ranchi University in partnership with OpenCon on 12 November 2016 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The OpenCon is a conference for the next generation to learn about Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data, develop critical skills, and catalyze action towards a more open system of research and education organized by SPARC, the Right to Research Coalition, and a Organizing Committee of students and early career academic professionals from around the world. The OpenCon 2016 Ranchi is a satellite event of the main OpenCon 2016 which was hosted for the first time in Ranchi, Jharkhand and is the only second satellite event to be held in India this year. First being the OpenCon 2016 Chandigarh which was organized as a parallel event along side of the Wiki Conference India held at Chandigarh in August 2016. Previously OpenCon 2015 Kolkata satellite event was organized in December 2015 at Kolkata by the Open Access India community of practice consisting of students, researchers, librarians, professors advocating for Open Access, Open Data, and Open Education in India. Approximately 2000 people have attended various satellite events around the world in the past 2014 and 2015. A synopsis of these meetings has been described below. Meeting with Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi On 8th August, 11 AM, Mr Manish Siosdia (Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi) had an interaction with the Wikimedians. The Delhi Government is all ready to roll out education programs in the Delhi region, in fact, to help us resolve our gender gap issues, Delhi Government would help us focus more on women's colleges at the initial stage. The Delhi Government has also expressed its intent to conduct a Wiki-activity in Indian languages on M.K. Gandhi in September month, such that Delhi Government could further facilitate (small souvenirs) the contributors on 2nd October as a part of the M.K. Gandhi's birthday celebration. Delhi Government is also looking at possible interventions where GLAM activities could be undertaken. Incorporating WIkimedia projects under Delhi Government's free-public wifi scheme has also been proposed. The meeting was arranged by Wikimedia India and attended by Katherine Maher along with Wikimedia India EC's (Yohann Thomas, Sanket Oswal, Abhinav Srivastava). Department of Electronics and Information Technology Meeting On 8th August,1 PM, Wikimedians met Mr. Rajiv Bansal, Joint Secretary. Government of India, Department of Electronics and Information Technology at this office in Delhi. The talks centered around bringing DIETY newsletter under open license, a collaboration between Government of India and WMIN + CIS-A2K over government's vikaspedia, drawing attention to Indian language content to be released under Creative Commons, Collaboration with the ministry towards making the government websites include better and accurate language content, etc. The meeting was arranged by CIS-A2K and attended by Katherine Maher along with CIS-A2K staff (Tanveer Hasan) and Wikimedia India EC's (Sanket Oswal, Abhinav Srivastava). Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Meeting On 8th August,5.30 PM. Wikimedians met Dr Ramesh Gaur (Head Libarary- JNU) and Dr Anup Das (Documentation Officer). JNU will be opening up its central repository of thesis (almost 22,000 units, including PhDs, M.Phil and Master's Program) under open access. JNU will be assisting us in providing journal articles to our editors for use on Wikipedia. 'One Lib One Ref" workshop at JNU would also be conducted in JNU shortly (maybe in September). JNU also has shown its intent at digitization Dr B.R. Ambedkar's writing under the Hindi Wikisource. Further collaborations during seminars at JNU on Wikisource projects would also be taken up. The meeting was arranged by Wikimedia India and attended by Katherine Maher along with Wikimedia India EC's (Sanket Oswal, Abhinav Srivastava) and CIS-A2K staff (Tanveer Hasan). WikiConference India 2016 (WCI 2016) The WikiConference India 2016 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2016> was conducted on August 5,6,7 in Mohali, Punjab. Close to 100 attendees signed up to become member of Wikimedia India SAARC Regional Wikimedian meeting This meeting was in continuation with the past meetup done by Wikimedian from the countries of Bangladesh, India, Nepal & Pakistan in past WikiConferences conducted by WMF in Berlin in 2015 & Wikimania Mexico. This meetup consisted of members from members of Wikimedia Bangladesh, Wikimedia India, Representatives of Wikimedia Nepal & Wikimedia Pakistan represented by editors of Urdu Wikipedia Community. One of the ideas presented by the attendees was to conduct a SAARC regional conference for Wikimedians. To reach this goal, it was agreed to take a first step by setting up a Mailing list amongst the chapters of the 4 countries Other News - Tulu-language Wikipedia goes live Tulu Wikipedia <https://tcy.wikipedia.org/> has finally gone live after being in the Incubator for nine long years. Tulu is spoken by nearly 2 million speakers in the Mangaluru, Udupi and other South West regions of the Indian state of Karnataka and in some places in the state of Kerala. 198 editors have contributed so far to make this happen. The project has started seeing more activity since 2014 when the first ever community meetup was organised in April , 2014. St. Aloysius College and St. Agnes College, two educational institutions in Mangaluru, India have done a commendable job in institutionalizing education programs and several outreach programs for their students. Wikimedia India congratulates everyone who have helped grow this project, the language committee and other friends in the global communities who have supported and guided in working towards the approval of the project. - Bangalore Meetup <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Bangalore/Bangalore63> A Bangalore Meetup was organized on 21st August 2016 at the CIS office,Domlur. The Agenda for the conference included Wikiconference India 2016 experiences and learnings sharing, planning for Bangalore-based Wiki activities & discussion on the India at Rio Olympics Edit-a-Thon organized by Wikimedia India - Government of Tamil Nadu orders its departments and institutions to release content under CC-BY-SA Tamil Development and Information Department of Government of Tamil Nadu has issued a Government Order (Number: 105, Date: 01. 07. 2016) to Tamil University, Thanjavur and all other government departments and institutions to release all their publications, archives and collections under Creative Commons by Share-Alike license. This Government Order has got the approval from the TN Government's Legal Department and issued by the order of Governor of Tamil Nadu. He started editing in January 2015 & with help from senior Hindi wikipedians, within 2 months he reached an edit count of 3,000.Currently he has an edit count of 6,500+ with almost 750 articles created to his name. The real story behind this truly inspiring Wikipedian lies in his humble background. Rarely having any access to a laptop, almost all of his edits have been done through a mobile phone ([ http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_s5610-4191.php Samsung Galaxy S5610]). Editing on his phone whenever he gets time,raju while sharing his experience has confessed that editing through a mobile phone was very difficult, due to which he regrets that the contributions which he has made to Wikipedia is not enough and wants to do more for the community & his language. With Hindi having one of the lowest Editors per million speakers, Raju says that Hindi Wikipedia is not growing as fast as some of the other Indic Languages, due to which his primary aim is to see that the community grows to its full Potential. Upcoming Edit-a-ton : Rio Olympics 2016

Dear All, As you all remain aware the world's biggest sporting event 'The Olympics' is set to knock the door, this August. At present, 111 athletes from India have qualified, the largest ever contingent. More than 311 National Coaching Camps have been held across India as a part of their pre-tournament preparation. To celebrate this sporting festival we at Wikimedia India have decided to promote a virtual-edit-a-ton. During the primary research, It was observed that a lot many areas on Indian Sports and 'India at Olympics' for which no article exist. Even if they do, there presence on Indian languages remain negligible. Considering this event would be in progression soon, we have decided to promote this activity. While working on Olympics we have made attempts to promote virtual edit-a-ton on a different theme altogether, we also decided to make the awards different. For every 15 good articles created by an editor, Wikimedia India would be planting trees on their behalf in their name symbolising '*Wikipedia* *India Supports India at Olympics, tree planted by Wikipedian......*'. Considering tree plantation involves significant time and human labour, we have partnered with a tree plantation organisation SankalpTaru <https://www.sankalptaru.org/>. They would be our sponsors for this event. Pomegranate trees in Barmer, Thar Desert Rajasthan would be planted. These trees will be planted on a rural farmer's land who would further nurture these trees under the supervision of SankalpTaru. Once the harvest starts, the local inhabitants would start earning livelihood by selling fruits (based on the consent of Wikipedia who is awarded the respective tree).
