Subject: [WikiConference India 2020] Community Engagement Survey
To: Wikimedia India Community list <wikimediaindia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is doing great.
I am writing this email to invite you all to participate in the Community
Engagement Survey for WikiConference India 2020. The Community Engagement
Survey is one of the key requirements for drafting the Conference & Event
Grant application for the Wikimedia Foundation.
The survey will have questions regarding a few demographic details, your
experience with Wikimedia, challenges and needs, and your expectations for
WCI 2020. The responses will help us to form an initial idea of what is
expected out of WCI 2020, and draft the grant application accordingly.
Please note that this will not directly influence the specificities of the
program, there will be a detailed survey to assess the program needs after
funding.
Please fill the survey at; https://forms.gle/YkA9UfcbXo3c637M6. The survey
will be open until 23:59 hrs of 22 December 2019.
Please pass on this message to your community mailing lists, and it would
be great if you post on the Village Pumps of your local Wikis. Looking
forward to all of your active participation.
Let me know if there are any questions.
Best wishes,
Pavan Santhosh.

Hello,
I am Sejal Khatri. I am a graduate student at the University of Washington
and have worked as an engineer on the Wikipedia Programs and Events
Dashboard Tool. I am planning a research study to understand Indic-language
communities. This study will help us understand community needs and
facilitate further development measures!
I am currently in the process of recruiting Wikipedians from 'mr' Wikipedia
for an interview study. If you agree to be in the study, you will
participate in an interview with a researcher which should last between 60
and 90 minutes and will be conducted remotely via voice or video chat or
in-person at a location of your preference.
In exchange for your participation, you will receive a ₹1430 gift card.

Hello everyone,
We have a few updates regarding the WikiConference India 2020 proposal for
Hyderabad. Initial conversations around the proposal of conducting Wiki
Conference India 2020 in Hyderabad were started in earlier this month in
several Indian wikimedia spaces (Wikimedia India-l mailing list, Meta-Wiki,
and, several Indian language Wikipedias village pumps).
Firstly, we are happy to share the news that there has been a very good
positive response from individual Wikimedians[1]. Also there have
community-wide discussions on local Village Pumps on various languages.
Several of these discussions have reached consensus[2], and are supporting
this idea.
We will be engaging with more communities this week, and clear any
concerns/doubts people may have during this week. Also to wrap up these
discussions and conclude, we would like to call for IRC.
Details of IRC:
* Timings and Date: 6:00 pm on 20 November 2019
* Website: https://webchat.freenode.net/
* Channel: #wci
Looking forward for all your active participation.
Thanks & Regards,
Pavan Santhosh.

Hello,
We are glad to inform you that Project Tiger 2.0/GLOW is going to start
very soon. You know about Project Tiger first iteration where we saw
exciting and encouraging participation from different Indian Wikimedia
communities. To Know about Project Tiger 1.0 please see this page -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Supporting_Indian_Language_Wikipedias_Progr…
Like project Tiger 1.0, This iteration will have 2 components
1. Infrastructure support - Supporting Wikimedians from India with
internet support for 6 months and providing Chrome books.
2. Article writing contest - A 3-month article writing contest will be
conducted for Indian Wikimedians communities. Following community feedback,
we noted some community members wanted the process of article list
generation to be improved. In this iteration there will be at least two
lists of articles a) Google-generated list, b) community suggested a list.
Google generated list will be given to the community members before
finalising the final list. On the other hand, the community may create a
list by discussing among the community over Village pump, Mailing list and
similar discussion channels.
We request you to go through these pages to know more about Project Tiger
2.0/GLOW
1.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Growing_Local_Language_Content_on_Wikipedia…
2.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Growing_Local_Language_Content_on_Wikipedia…
We will give you more updates about every step and procedure in the next
two-three days.

Dear All,
Firstly I would like to thank you for the continuous support and
contribution to the Wikimedia movement specially in Wikisource.
You are aware that after first wikisourse workshop organized in Patiala,
the Punjabi Wikisource Community is growing rapidly, reaching a total of
7000+ pages proofreaded in last two month. For updated page/
digitized content you go here[2]
But Indic community members have not got any chance to advantages for this
kind of Workshop for their language community. Workshop for Wikisource
of Punjabi,
Sanskrit & Kannada language community is completed. Assamese, Gujarati &
Tamil have shown their interest for workshop in coming month. Keeping this
in mind we are planning to have an IRC[1] on 17th February 2019 (@8PM) for
the Indic Wikisource community. Please suggest more Agenda for the IRC.
:Agenda
- Update status of what we have done after first IRC and IWCC2018
- Major issues we faced, and how do I help personally towards the
specific community ( Offline and Online both)

Hello everyone,
As it is said, "A picture is worth a thousand words but vector
illustrations are even better", [Attribution
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2016/Submissions/A_pic…>].
I am delighted to announce the "SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India".
SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India is a planned 38-day long campaign to
translate the English-labelled SVG files into Indian languages for use on
regional language Wikipedias. During Wikigraphists Bootcamp in September
2018
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference/KCVelaga/Wikigraphists_Bo…>,
we had several Wikimedians from India who were trained on using Inkscape
and other tools, to create vector illustrations (SVG is a file format for
vector graphics, like JPG for raster graphics). This campaign is a
follow-up of that project and also with a goal to promote the idea of
vector graphics among the larger Indian community. Often, we see
English-labelled SVG files being used on Indian Wikipedias, this campaign
also helps us to have localised SVG files with labels in regional languages
to be used on Wikipedias.
More about the campaign can be seen at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in…,
where all the required material to understand about vector graphics and
SVGs is already listed. There will be campaign specific tutorials for the
campaign posted soon at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in…
.
This message is to notify the community about the planned campaign, more
details to follow soon. The campaign starts on 21st. February 2019, marking
"International Mother Language Day", and will continue till 31st March
2019. To make it easy for the participants, a list of images (inclusive,
but not limited to) will posted at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in…
.
All the communities are invited to actively take part in the campaign, you
can sign-up yourself as a "Community organiser" for your language at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in…
(max
two per community), or just sign up as a participant at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in…
.
If you would like to organise a small onsite event, please sign up at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in…,
before 21st January 2019. So that it'll help us to finalise the budget.
It might sound confusing, but all the resources required for smooth
participation will be online far before the campaign starts on 21st
February 2019. If you have any questions, please email me or post at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:SVG_Translation_Campaign_20…
.
Thanks,

Dear Wikimedians,
Train-the-Trainer or TTT is a residential training program that attempts to
groom leadership skills among the Indian Wikimedia community (including
English) members. Earlier TTT has been conducted in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017
and 2018. This year CIS-A2K is interested to collaborate with the community
in hosting the event. Interested community members please check the
following link:
