Dear Wikimedians,
Hope your February is going well.
I am writing this email to invite you all to the very first regional
education meeting[1]. This month we are starting with our community members
based in the CEE region[2]. You can use these regional meetings as an
opportunity to learn and share your projects, tools, or ideas with the
education community from the CEE region.
These regional education meetings are planned by the community specialists
of the EduWiki Outreach Collaborators (EWOC)[3] and the Education team. We
are using this as an opportunity to strengthen the EduWiki network, explore
collaboration opportunities, and identify common practices or challenges
that are faced by our community members in different regions of the world.
We are launching these regional education meetings as a pilot initiative to
complement our general monthly office hours[4], we encourage you to
participate, share your ideas, and help this become a fully community-led
initiative.
Our first CEE education meeting will take place on 18th February 2021 at
13:00 UTC <https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1613653217>, it will be led by
Nebojša Ratkovic, Education Program Manager of Wikimedia Serbia[5] and EWOC
community specialist for the region. At this CEE meeting, Nebojša will
share some highlights from the 15 years of education work by Wikimedia
Serbia and have a questions-and-answers round. If you have other ideas,
topics, or questions you want to ask, you can add them to the agenda
here[6]. We will try to answer them during the meeting. We are looking
forward to seeing you there!
As a reminder, our general monthly office hours are still available for you
to join, share your work, connect with other community members, and get
help or advice from the Education team. The next general office hour is
scheduled for 24th February 2021 at 14:00 UTC, you can find the topics of
the meetings here[7]. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach
out to me.
Best!

The Community Resources team is inviting you to an exciting opportunity to
be a committee member as part of the grants programs' participatory
grantmaking practice.
Participatory grantmaking ensures that resourcing community efforts in the
movement is diverse, equal and inclusive. This practice aligns with
movement strategy recommendation 4. Ensure Equity in Decision-making:
Establishing shared responsibility and accountability for decision-making
and distribution of resources.
Serving committee members will have the opportunity to inform and advise
funding decisions and proactively share recommendations and mentorship to
support grantees worldwide in their development, growth, and sustainability
strategies; that contribute to a world in which every single human being
can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
You will also strengthen your capacity in participatory decision-making
processes while learning about our community's incredible work and the
different contexts that influence their work.
Here is statement by a current committee member, Thepwnco, on their
experience;
My experiences with Wikimedia Foundation grant programs have been very
rewarding, and I feel fortunate to have served as a volunteer committee
member since 2014. Grant programs contribute to equity and sustainability
in our movement through funding unmet and under-resourced needs. Under our
participatory approach to grantmaking, volunteers play a key role in
decision-making. Volunteers also help support and strengthen community-led
initiatives by reviewing grant proposals for impact and providing feedback
and other support to prospective grantees. But being a volunteer committee
member is much more than just a way to share your knowledge and insights,
it’s also an incredible opportunity to learn and be inspired by the breadth
of amazing and innovative work taking place across the movement and in
diverse communities and regions.
Here are the committees that are currently soliciting new members:
* Project Grants:* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project
** Project Grants Committee reviewing Community Organizing proposals: This
committee reviews proposals for projects that inspire and coordinate
volunteers, via campaigns, training, contests and other forms of community
organizing. You can learn more about Project Grants here:
** Project Grants Committee reviewing Research and Software proposals: This
committee reviews proposals for projects that create or maintain software
that supports the Wikimedia movement, or that conduct research to answer
questions important for Wikimedia communities and projects. *Simple Annual
Plan Grants: *https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Simple/About
** Simple APG Committee: This committee reviews proposals to fund a group
or organization's programs and operating expenses for 12 months. The groups
and organizations need to have experience managing programs and grant
funding already.
Orientation and training is provided for new members, and you don’t have to
have previous experience to sign up.
Committee responsibilities include:
- Providing review and constructive feedback to help support applicants
and strengthen grant proposals
- Evaluating and recommending promising proposals for funding
- Helping recruit and spread the word about grants
- Optional: Becoming a project advisor for proposals that interest you
Eligibility requirements for committee members can be found here:
* Project Grants:

You can sign up as a candidate for a committee here:

Subject: [Affiliates] One week until #Wikipedia20! New updates + resources
To: <affiliates(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi everyone,
We are officially one week away from Wikipedia’s 20th birthday! 🎉 Please
see below for the latest updates about the celebration and ways to support
and participate:
Virtual birthday party
For Wikipedia's 20th birthday party [1] on 15 January, we'd love to hear
from you, highlight your work, and have your help to spread the word. Here
is how to get involved:
1.
Record a video saying “Happy Birthday” or birthday wishes for Wikipedia
in your language for our birthday video montage. You can record and
submit a short clip (under 30 seconds) via your phone or computer by going
to the Tribute webpage [2]. The deadline to submit a video is 12 January.
*
2.
If you have a Wikimedia-related fun fact or accomplishment from the
movement that you would like us to highlight in the celebration, please add
it to the talk page on Meta [3], and we’ll highlight these during the
celebration.
3.
Invite your followers to the event on social media. Here’s a sample post
to adapt for your channels: Happy early 20th birthday to @Wikipedia, the
world's largest free online encyclopedia! Join us at their virtual party on
Friday, 15 January to celebrate Wikipedia and the people who make it
possible. Details: link
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2021/01/01/you-are-invited-to-wikipedias-20th-bi…>
#Wikipedia20
Happy birthday videos to use at your event!
Check out the Meta page [4] for multiple resources that you can use for
your local birthday celebrations, including a birthday video message [5] from
Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Katherine Maher and video clips of
happy birthday in multiple languages.
Social media: #Wikipedia20
Visit the updated social media section on Meta [6] for posts to share on
your channels before and on 15 January. These are the main things to know:
-
Please use #Wikipedia20 and tag @Wikipedia in all posts so we can help
share them
-
Before 15 January, we would greatly appreciate your help in spreading
the word about the virtual event [1]
-
On 15 January, the Wikimedia Foundation will officially begin
celebrating Wikipedia Day at 7:00 am UTC [7]. You can see our content
plans on Meta. Please retweet and share our posts.
-
On 15 January, please send Wikipedia a happy birthday message and
encourage your followers to do the same. Link to the commemorative website (
20.wikipedia.org) and include celebratory graphics [8].
-
If you would like additional amplification from the Wikimedia and/or
Wikipedia social media accounts of materials you are sharing, please
complete this form [9] with the relevant details.
FYI — paid video promotions
The Foundation will also be promoting videos that celebrate the birthday
through paid digital media on a variety of non-Wikimedia websites. These
will start on 15 January and continue for about four weeks. The plan is to
reach existing Wikipedia readers in Nigeria and the United States with the
following two goals:
1.
To inform them about the Wikimedia movement, broadly defined
2.
To increase awareness of the humans that power the Wikimedia sites
As a reminder, you can stay up-to-date by watching the Wikipedia 20
discussion page [10], and joining the Facebook group [11] and Telegram
group [12].
If you have questions, please email wikipedia20(a)wikimedia.org or use the
discussion page [10].
We are so excited to celebrate with you next week!

To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Wikimedia Clinic»
Google Meet[2].
