they got recognized, got some startup funding onto a private persons
account, but then failed to create an association within one year.
unfortunately they "lost" some of the money (no book-keeping or not
enough bills and receipts). the group of people fell apart because of
this.
what is also remarkable, nobody of the persons on the mailing list
contributed regularly to wikipedia, imo the root cause of the failure.
the spanish chapter survived a "money lost" incident.
